The matter came to the fore after a neurologist who treated the woman took to Twitter and gave an account of the shocking incident and the rare syndrome. “The symptoms did not improve, and the next day she developed a mild imbalance while walking. She was referred to me for an opinion.
She had mild right-cerebellar signs. MRI brain revealed an infarct in the right posterior inferior cerebellar territory, MR angiogram showed left vertebral hypoplasia,” Dr. Sudhir tweeted.
As per doctors, a vessel supplying blood to her brain was pressed when she bent to get the hair wash, leading to the stroke. Thanks to the deep understanding of the subject, the doctors were able to save her, and she has now been put on medication for lifetime like any stroke patient.

Woman Put on Lifelong Medication
The stroke occurred due to “hyperextension of neck towards the basin while washing hair”, a TOI report quoted Dr Sudhir saying.
After identifying the key issue, the doctors put her on relevant medications. She is currently recuperating, and like most stroke patients, she has been put on a lifelong medication.
What is Beauty Parlour Stroke?
As per MedIndi, the stroke is observed when a person goes to a salon to get hair shampoo. For hair wash, one needs to bend their head back in the salon sink. If the neck does not have apprpriate support, or the neck is bent too excessively for a long period of time, the arteries that supply blood to brain may get compressed, resulting in blood clots in the brain, that may turn fatal.
“Take Home Massage”: Doctor Gives Tip
In his series of tweets, Dr Sudhir also mentioned what one can do if such symptoms appear in similar circumstances. “Take home message: Stroke affecting vertebro-basilar artery territory can occur during shampoo hair-wash in a beauty parlor, especially in women with other atherosclerotic risk factors and undetected vertebral hypoplasia. Prompt recognition and treatment can prevent disability,” he tweeted.
