An Indian Air Force (IAF) Jaguar fighter jet crashed late Wednesday night near Jamnagar, Gujarat, during a routine training exercise. The incident has resulted in one pilot losing their life while the second pilot managed to eject safely, according to official confirmations.

Incident Details

The crash occurred around 11:05 PM IST on April 2, 2025, in Suvarda village, approximately 12 kilometers from Jamnagar city and in close proximity to the Jamnagar IAF station. The aircraft was conducting a standard training sortie when the incident took place.

Initial reports from the scene indicated that one pilot had ejected safely and was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation. Search operations were launched for the second pilot who was initially reported as missing.

However, later confirmations revealed the unfortunate news that one pilot had lost their life in the incident, while confirming the safe ejection and rescue of the other pilot.

Emergency Response

Local authorities and IAF emergency response teams were quickly dispatched to the crash site after the incident was reported. The aircraft reportedly caught fire after crashing in an open field, though fortunately, there have been no reports of civilian casualties or property damage, as the crash occurred away from densely populated areas.

“The aircraft crashed in an open area with no immediate impact on civilian infrastructure,” a local official stated, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to brief media.

Investigation Underway

The Indian Air Force has ordered a court of inquiry to determine the cause of the crash, which remains unknown at this time. This standard procedure will examine all technical and operational aspects that could have contributed to the incident.

“A thorough investigation will be conducted to understand what led to this unfortunate incident,” an IAF spokesperson commented. “Every aspect will be carefully examined to prevent similar occurrences in the future.”

Context of IAF Jaguar Fleet

The Jaguar fighter jets, known for their deep penetration strike capabilities and tactical reconnaissance functions, form an important component of India’s air defense strategy. The IAF operates several squadrons of these aircraft across the country.

This incident follows another Jaguar crash that occurred earlier in March 2025 near Ambala, where the pilot managed to eject safely. These consecutive incidents may prompt a fleet-wide review of maintenance protocols and operational procedures.

Challenges in Reporting

The incident highlights the challenges of real-time reporting during military aviation accidents. Initial news coverage between 10:15 PM and 11:06 PM on April 2 reported one pilot missing, while later updates confirmed the fatality, demonstrating how information evolves as investigations progress.

Condolences and Support

The Defense Ministry has expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased pilot, assuring all possible support during this difficult time. The injured pilot is reportedly in stable condition and receiving necessary medical care.

Military aviation experts note that despite rigorous training and maintenance protocols, training sorties carry inherent risks that the armed forces continuously work to mitigate through improved safety measures and technological upgrades.

The IAF is expected to release additional details as the investigation progresses in the coming days.
