In a strange and conversation-worthy first, the UP police has filed a 30-page chargesheet against a man for reportedly killing a rat by drowning it in a drain! This bizarre incident has sparked outrage among animal rights activists, who have hailed the move as a victory for the voiceless creatures.

The accused, a potter named Manoj Kumar, allegedly tied the rodent to a brick and drowned it in a drain, leading to outrage from animal rights activists. The rat’s tail was reportedly attached to a stone, prompting a viral video on social media that caught the attention of local activists.

The autopsy later confirmed the rat’s cause of death as “dry drowning”, and Kumar was charged under IPC section 429 and section 11(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Meanwhile, Vikendra Sharma, the complainant who pursued the case, ensured that the rat’s carcass was sent to IVRI-Bareilly for autopsy, and he even paid for the transportation expenses.

While some may argue that it’s just a rat and that such a case is frivolous, others believe that no animal should be subjected to cruelty, no matter how small. As Sharma put it, “Rats may be just a rodent for many people, but the way it was killed comes under the category of cruelty against animals.”

The Facts of the Matter

In Uttar Pradesh, a man has been charged for a heinous crime that has sent shockwaves through the state. Was it murder? Embezzlement? Tax evasion? Nope, it’s far worse. Brace yourself, because this is a case of – wait for it – killing a rat.

In a curious turn of events, a potter from Budaun has found himself in hot water for allegedly committing the reprehensible act of rat-slaying. The man in question, Manoj Kumar, reportedly tied the unsuspecting rodent to a brick and callously drowned it in a drain.

Animal Rights Activist Files Complaint

This dastardly act was caught on camera and quickly went viral on social media, leading to a complaint being filed against Kumar at the Civil Lines police station by a local animal rights activist, Vikendra Sharma.

Kumar was subsequently charged under IPC section 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle) and section 11 (1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Despite his claims that it was his children who had killed the rat and that he had only removed it from the drain during the filming of the video, the autopsy report confirmed the cause of death to be “dry drowning”.

Activist Footed Bill to Send Rat for Autopsy

The investigating officer, armed with this damning evidence, filed a chargesheet against Kumar.

The situation took another strange turn and the rat’s carcass was sent to IVRI-Bareilly for autopsy, with Sharma himself footing the bill for the transportation expenses.

This has created quite a stir in Uttar Pradesh, as it is believed to be the first time that a chargesheet has been filed in such a case.

“Rats may just be rodent…”

Sharma, who was the driving force behind the case, remarked on the gravity of the situation. “Rats may be just a rodent for many people, but the way it was killed comes under the category of cruelty against animals. Hence, I pursued this case and will ensure that no one tries to do the same to any other animal in future.”

First Such Case in UP

Circle officer Alok Mishra, who is handling the case, stated that the chargesheet has been submitted to the court for review, and if approved, will be presented before the judge. Mishra also expressed surprise that such a case had arisen in the first place, claiming that “as far as I know, this is probably the first case in UP where someone has been chargesheeted for killing a rat.”
