An inconsolable Mandira Bedi performed her husband Raj Kaushal’s last rites on Thursday July 1. The last rites ceremony was attended by Raveena Tandon, Mouni Roy, Samir Soni, Ronit Roy and other B-Town celebrities. It was truly a dark day for Bollywood yesterday, as ad man and film producer Raj Kaushal died at an age of 49 due to cardiac arrest.

One day after the death of film producer and ad maverick Raj Kaushal broke, the images of his wife Mandira Bedi performing the last rites of her husband have gone viral on the internet. In the images, Bedi can be seen breaking the shackles of patriarchy by defying the Hindu custom of only men being able to take part in funeral rituals.

Popular B-Town Celebs Attend Funeral
Several popular b-town celebrities gave Kaushal’s wife Mandira Bedi a comforting shoulder to weep on and a warm presence. These celebrities include popular 90s Bollywood actress Raveena Tandon, Naagin actress Mouni Roy, Ronit Roy, who not only is a television and film actor, but was also a close friend of Kaushal, famous television actor Samir Soni and more.

Kaushal’s last rites were performed at the Shivaji Ground crematorium on June 30. While Mandira was never seen without wearing a mask for the protection against the coronavirus, her grief and shock was palpable and gut wrenching.
Other than Ronit Roy, Sameer Soni and above-mentioned stars, Neelam Singh, Manasi Joshi Roy, Ashish Chowdhry Aditi Gowitrikar, Vidya Malvade, and other popular celebrities were also spotted by the paparazzi visiting the couple’s residence. The couple’s residence in Mumbai is called ‘RaMa’ – an amalgamation of Raj and Mandira.

“Raj told Mandira he was having a heart attack”: Sulaiman Merchant
According to a Times of India report, popular music composer Sulaiman Merchant claimed that Raj told Mandira that he was having a heart attack. Speaking to the leading daily, Merchant said that he was at the couple’s bungalow on the night the heart attack happened.
“Raj was feeling uneasy”, claimed Merchant. Upon being asked what happened next, Merchant said, “Well, he took an antacid tablet.”
At around 4 AM, things turned bad to worse and Merchant claimed Raj told his wife Mandira that he was having a heart attack.
“Mandira acted swiftly and called Ashish Chaudhary, who rushed to their place. Mandira and Ashish put him in the car but he was losing consciousness.”
The one half of the music duo Salim-Sulaiman continued and said-
“I think they drove off, taking him to the Lilavati Hospital if I’m not wrong. But in the next 5-10 minutes, they realized that he had no pulse. Before they reached the doctor, it was too late.”

Raj Suffered a Heart-Attack at 32
In his conversation with the leading daily, Merchant also said that Raj had suffered another heart attack before the fatal one. Sulaiman said that Raj was apparently 30-32 back when he suffered from a heart attack and since then, he took care of himself.
“But they took a lot of care after that attack, and he’d kept fine since then,”
