The groundbreaking exercise showcases India’s innovative approach to defense infrastructure
Pioneering Airstrip Inaugurated in Uttar Pradesh
The Indian Air Force (IAF) made history yesterday by conducting comprehensive take-off and landing exercises on the newly constructed airstrip along the Ganga Expressway in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The May 2 event marked a significant milestone in India’s defense preparedness strategy, introducing the nation’s first expressway airstrip capable of supporting fighter jet operations during both day and night.
The purpose-built 3.5-kilometer stretch represents a major advancement in India’s defense infrastructure, incorporating state-of-the-art lighting systems, reinforced pavement, and advanced navigation equipment, including a CAT II Instrument Landing System (ILS) that enables operations in low-visibility conditions.

Elite Aircraft Showcase Military Versatility
The exercise featured an impressive array of IAF aircraft demonstrating the versatility and operational readiness of India’s air power. Spectators witnessed precision maneuvers from frontline fighters including the Rafale, SU-30 MKI, Mirage-2000, MiG-29, and Jaguar.
Transport capabilities were demonstrated by the C-130J Super Hercules and AN-32 aircraft, while a MI-17 V5 helicopter showcased rotary-wing operations. The carefully choreographed exercise included low fly-pasts, touch-and-go landings, and full-stop landings, with operations continuing into the evening hours between 7 PM and 10 PM.

Strategic Significance and Dual-Use Infrastructure
“This airstrip represents a new benchmark in civil-military infrastructure integration,” said a senior defense official present at the event. “The ability to convert regular expressways into emergency runways significantly enhances our tactical flexibility and response capabilities.”
The Ganga Expressway airstrip joins three other expressway-based emergency runways in Uttar Pradesh but stands out as the first in India equipped for nighttime fighter operations. This development aligns with global military trends of utilizing civilian infrastructure for defense purposes while maximizing resource efficiency.
The strategic importance of such facilities extends beyond military applications to include disaster relief operations and emergency medical evacuations, demonstrating India’s commitment to multi-purpose infrastructure development.

Community Engagement and Security Measures
The historic exercise attracted substantial public interest, with local residents, students, and officials gathering to witness the showcase of aerial prowess. Comprehensive security arrangements included the deployment of over 250 CCTV cameras throughout the area to ensure both safety and smooth operations.
Senior defense and government officials attended the event, underscoring its significance in the national security framework. The public engagement component highlights the IAF’s role not only in defense but also as a source of national pride and inspiration.
Future Implications for Defense Infrastructure
The successful completion of these exercises demonstrates India’s evolving approach to defense preparedness and infrastructure development. By integrating military capabilities with civilian projects, India is efficiently enhancing its strategic readiness while minimizing additional land requirements and construction costs.
Defense analysts suggest this model could be replicated across other major highway projects throughout the country, creating a network of emergency runways that would significantly complicate adversary targeting while providing operational flexibility to the IAF.
As India continues to modernize its defense capabilities, innovations like the Ganga Expressway airstrip represent important steps toward a more resilient and adaptable military infrastructure.
