Recently, Tesla CEO Elon Musk reacted to the news of an Indian CEO hiring a woman to slap him every time he uses Facebook. Reportedly, Indian origin CEO Maneesh Sethi hired a woman to slap him every time he goes on the rabbit hole of unproductivity by using his social media.
Sethi, who’s the founder of Pavlok, floated an ad for a person who may stop him from using his social media. Soon, she hired Kara, who sat beside him and monitored his online activities. And of course, ended up slapping Sethi.
In his interview to HuffPost, Sethi claimed that he used to spend as many as 19 hours a week Facebook and Reddit. After Sethi’s story was shared on Twitter, it made its way on Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk’s feed. Musk reacted to the story and Sethi was beside himself after the development.
Background
So, you’re sitting at your desk, have all your day’s work scheduled and streamlined, and are ready to dig deep.
You’ve already had your coffee and have gotten some unimportant calls out of the way. As you open your first task, an impulse to check your social media kick in. You tell yourself that it would just be a few minutes. An hour and a half later, you’re still scrolling away, now with the knowledge that you’ve almost wasted an hour.
We’re sure you’re nodding in agreement, and trust us, you’re not the only one. Millions of people at different job positions, find themselves being trapped in the social media loop. Recently, an Indian-origin CEO found an interesting way to break out of loop.
The Facts of the Matter
“Hey! I’m looking for someone who can work next to me at a defined location (my house or a mission cafe) and will make sure to watch what is happening on my screen. When I am wasting time, you’ll have to yell at me or if need be, slap me,” tech startup founder Maneesh Sethi’s Craigslist ad from 2012 read.
Sethi Spent 19 Hours On Social Media Every Week
Being a digital nomad, Sethi was frustrated on the amount of time he wasted on social media platforms such as Facebook and Reddit. Using an application called Rescue Time, Sethi calculated that he was 38% less productive due to social media. According to his calculation, he spent as many as 19 hours of his week doing unproductive tasks.

To end the vicious cycle, Sethi posted an add on US classifieds advertising platform Craigslist for someone who will monitor him, and stop him from getting to his social media platforms. On his blog, Sethi mentioned that he received 20 emails within an hour and hired a woman named Kara for a compensation of $8/hour (Rs. 600/hour).

The next day, he met Kara and gave her a brief about the tasks he would like to accomplish. He further instructed her to force him to stay on task and not get distracted. Like most of us, Sethi found himself checking his social media and eventually, Kara did end up slapping him.
The video of Kara slapping the Indian origin CEO has already been shared on YouTube.
The story, which is almost 10 years old now, was reshared on Twitter recently. A Twitter handle @Rainmaker1973 tweeted, “The story of Maneesh Sethi, the computer programmer who hired a woman to slap him in the face every time he used Facebook, resulting in massive productivity increase.”

Like most, Sethi too was beside himself when Elon Musk reacted to the story. “I’m the guy in this picture. Is @elonmusk giving me two emojis the highest I’ll ever reach? Is this my icarus flying too close to the sun moment? Was that implied by the fire symbols elon posted? Time will tell,” he tweeted.
