A video of an Indian woman wanting to get a visa after her father’s death being told to ‘get out’ of Indian embassy is going viral on Twitter. On 24th November 2021 a woman visa applicant from New York, who was willing to travel to India, was refused of the same.

Not only she was denied a visa, but she was also insulted and had to face misbehavior from the Consulate officer. In the video, an Indian officer in the Consulate General of India in New York can be seen shouting at the woman and saying “take your money and go”.

Misbehaviour by the Officer

According to reports, the officer started frowning at the woman and returned her visa application along with some money submitted by her. In the video can be heard saying, “Just take your money and go out. You will not receive a visa. That’s it!” The officer also refused to point out any shortcomings in the woman’s visa application. Even when the woman asked the officer why he was shouting at her he continued to castigate the woman.

Video being Uploaded on Social Media

Another man who was witnessing the entire incident shot the complete scenario and uploaded it on Twitter. He posted it with a caption that read, ‘Disgusting rude behavior by an Indian consulate officer in New York towards a woman applying for a visa to perform the last rites of her father. Who does he think he is. He’s a govt SERVANT hired to serve Indians not screw Indians.’

External Affairs Minister Tagged in the Video for Attention

While the person was shooting the video, another officer came into the frame and refused to shoot as cell phones are not allowed to be used in the consulate. The person also tagged the video to the official Twitter handles of the Indian Embassy in Washington DC and New York. He also tagged Dr. S. Jaishankar, the current Minister of External Affairs of the Indian Government. The purpose behind tagging these persons was to receive their attention on the matter. The same video was also tweeted by Simi Garewal, an actor and talk-show host.

Netizens’ Reaction to the Viral Video

The video has surfaced all over social media with more than 45,000 views to date on Twitter. However, the video is receiving mixed reactions from the netizens. Some of them alleged the officer for his rude behavior with the woman however, some refused to judge a government staff based on short footage on the internet.

Outcomes of the Viral Video

When the video of the misbehavior of the Indian Consulate Officer went viral on 24th November, disciplinary proceedings were issued against the officer alleged. However, the matter was resolved and the woman was issued the visa expeditiously.

The consulate replied on 27thNovember stating that they have registered the complaint as they maintain highest standards of public service. The matter has been reviewed by the Consul General and all the related applicants have been issued visas and are being reviewed.
