It is being called a “miracle” that doctors in Israel were able to complete an extremely complex procedure on a 12-year-old boy who had been struck by a car while riding a bicycle, as reported in The Times of Israel. The surgeons managed to reconnect the head to the neck of the child.

Suleiman Hassan, a 12-year-old, had a near-fatal accident while riding his bicycle when a careless driver struck him, causing a fracture in the head/neck junction and accompanying tears in the ligaments.

Suleiman was airlifted to Hadassah Ein Kerem and received a complicated operation. Dr. Ohad Einav, an orthopedist, indicated the injury was severe and the odds of survival were 50%. But, Dr. Ziv Asatsili was successful in conducting the surgery.

At Hadassah hospital in Ein Kerem, it was established that Suleiman Hassan, a Palestinian from the West Bank, had sustained a severe bilateral atlanto occipital joint dislocation, more commonly referred to as internal or orthopedic decapitation. This meant that the ligaments connecting the posterior base of Suleiman Hassan’s skull to the top vertebrae of his spine had been badly damaged.

Dr. Ohad Einav, an orthopedic specialist from Hadassah Ein Kerem, partnered with Dr. Ziv Asa in operating on Hassan and stated that “the most severe injury sustained by Hassan was a fractured joint between his head and neck, accompanied by a full rupture of the ligaments. Additionally, there was minor trauma to the abdomen. The injury was so serious that it almost separated the head from the neck.”

Dr. Einav reported that, after a careful assessment of the individual’s condition, they chose to perform surgery, reconnecting the skull to the spine.

The father of Suleiman expressed his deep and heartfelt appreciation for the trauma and orthopedics team that had saved his precious son’s life. Despite the low chance of success and the looming threat of danger, they managed to restore Suleiman to health through their vast expertise, innovative technology, and timely action. He was extremely grateful and thanked them for their hard work and dedication.
