In an unusual event that took place in Odisha Jail, Officials sahred Odisha jail doubled as the venue of marriage for an inmate, who was accused of raping the compainant, tied knots with her following court orders.
The jail Superintendent, Chaudhary Circle Kulmani Behera said, Prisoner Rajesh Singh, age 23, who is under trial, belonging from Gurudighatia area of the district, exchanged garlands with the complainant inside the jail premises after orders from a POCSO court and the DG (Prisons).
The officer said the bride, who turned 18 years old last month, was raped by Singh last year, got pregnant and is now the mother of his child.
The woman went to her in-laws after the marriage ceremony, but Singh would still have to remain in jail as his bail application is to be heard again next month.
The jail officer said that the POCSO court said that they will only hear the bail application after the accused marries the victim.
The jail administration on Thursday took the help of a local NGO to arrange for the wedding, which was supposed to happen in the presence of family members, friends and a lawyer from the POCSO court. Later a wedding reception was also held, which was attended by other prisoners.
