In a shocking incident of child abuse reported from Karnataka, a teacher burnt the private parts of a 3-year-old child for wetting pants, and police was reported claiming that the teacher’s actions were ‘not intentional’. The incident was reported from Karnataka’s Tumakuru and occurred earlier on August 22. Following the incident, a case was filed against the teacher, identified as KP Rashmi, on September 2.

In a Quint Report, Rahul Kumar Superintendent of police, Tumakuru, claimed that the victim was checked on multiple times following the abuse. SP Kumar added that the child is taken care of by his father, and added that villagers and family have said that the incident was not intentional in nature.

According to reports, the negligent teacher lit a match stick near the child’s scrotum and said that she would not extinguish it if he didn’t stop wetting his pants. In the pursuit, she ended up injuring the child’s private parts. While the boy is out of the danger, he suffered burns on his private parts.

The teacher has been reported to be suspended by the Child Development Project Officer, after a probe was conducted in the matter.

Earlier last month, a Dalit boy in Rajasthan was beaten to death by his teacher for drinking water from the teacher’s pot.

The Facts of the Matter

The Section 17 of the Right to Education Act, 2009, prohibits corporal punishment in any shape or form. The act imposes an absolute ban on physical or mental harassment to students, and further prescribes action that can be taken against a person guilty of such acts.

Despite the stringent laws put in place, teachers across the nation have time and time again reported to have assaulted and harassed students for trivial reasons. In one such incident, a teacher in Karnataka was suspended for burning the private parts of her 3-year-old student.

Teacher was Irritated by Student Urinating his Pants

The teacher allegedly harassed the student for wetting his pants. The incident occurred earlier on August 22 and a complaint was filed regarding the incident on September 2.

According to reports, an Anganwadi teacher, identified as Rashmi, burned the child’s private parts using a matchstick after being irritated over child wetting his pants. Superintendent of Police (SP) Rahulkumar Shahapurwad told media that the child used to wet himself often, which annoyed the teacher.

The Horrific Punishment

In order to make an “effort” to stop the child from frequently urinating, the teacher lit a matchstick near his scrotum, and lit it. The teacher mentioned that she would not extinguish the flame till he doesn’t stop urinating.

The teacher has since been suspended and booked under Juvenile Justice Act and under Section 285 of the Indian Penal Code.

Teacher Issues Apology, Parents File FIR

Following the incident, the accused teacher issued an apology for her conduct. However, the parents of the child wanted a strict action to be taken against her, and filed  an FIR. Subsequently, the Child and Women Welfare Department also sent a notice to the teacher.

Mirzapur Principal Hangs Student Upside Down

Earlier in October 2021, a school principal in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur reportedly hanged a class 2 student upside down for being ‘mischievious’. After the visuals of the incident went viral, the father of the young boy told media that the headmaster’s actions came out of “love” Further, the headmaster also told media that the child’s father had asked him to ‘correct’ his behaviour.
