A teen in Kerala recently made a robot to help his mother with daily chores. However, netizens on Twitter were not impressed with the man’s innovations. While some called the man out for giving the robot a dupatta which covered its ‘head’, and reaffirming patriarchal notions, others mentioned that men would go to lengths to avoid daily chores.
The man’s innovation was recently covered by Better India. The 17-year-old high schooler from Kerala built a robot after seeing his mother being frustrated over distance between the kitchen and dining hall. The class 12 student, identified as Muhammed Shiyad Chathoth, created ‘Android Pathooty’, a robot that travels the distance between kitchen and living room and serves family food and does other daily-chores.
When the teen saw a machine at a restaurant following a fixed path, he decided to innovate a robot. He then took to YouTube and saw videos from where he learnt how to put together a robot.
Many netizens called out the high schooler and questioned him why the robot was given a woman’s avatar. However, in his interview to Better India, Muhammed mentioned that the design was approved by his mother. He further said that he doesn’t want to send a wrong message through his innovation and added, “All of us, including my brother, father and I are equally involved in household chores.”
The Facts of the Matter
‘Necessity is the mother of invention’, and in the case of 17-year-old Muhammed Shiyad Chathoth, the notion is quite literal. Seeing his mother struggle with daily chores, the Kerala-based high schooler created a robot which serves food, and even remembers the time of medications.
However, like everything on internet these days, Muhammed’s innovation has divided netizens on Twitter. Some netizens have called the 17-year-old out for reaffirming thousands of years of patriarchy, by designing a robot that looks like a woman, and also has a scarf which covers its head.

How the Kerala Teen Got Idea to Make Robot
The idea of creating a robot for his mum struck the 17-year-old teen in 2019 when he was 14. While dining at a restaurant, he was instantly amazed by a robot doing the serving part. His mother too was impressed, and casually mentioned that it would be great if they had such a robot.
A young but keen Muhammed decided to put his mother’s casual remark into action. The teen asked the restaurant more details about the robot and found out that the machine costs Rs 3-4 lakhs. However, thanks to internet, he found out some cost-effective ways to build a similar robot.

One Year Later
In a year-or-so, Muhammed came up with a model. He fixed a stool on a metal platform and set up the entire system under four small tyres. He embedded a motor and then spent his time and energy into giving it a human-form.
In a Better India report, Muhammed was quoted explaining what made him give the robot a female appearance. “I asked my mother what appearance she prefered for the robot, and she said she wanted a female figure. I was aware of the fact that this might imply a gender stereotype but I went with her choice,” he said.
What ‘Android Pathooty’ Can Do?
Soon, ‘Android Pathooty’ came into existence. The robot is equipped to move from kitchen to dining hall, something Muhammed’s mother was frustrated with, at a faster pace. The robot serves family food and other things, and also reminds his mother about her.

Netizens Call Muhammed’s Innovation Out
Several netizens called Muhammed’s innovation regressive, as he gave her a female form, and added a scarf like cloth to cover the ‘head’.
They did not forget to add the flavourful patriarchy by covering her head with a scarf. They gendered the robot because it’s supposed to help around the house so she’s technically a robot bahu. 🤌🏻

Tech is not the solution for everything.
Tech cannot change a patriarchy mindset unless you use technology to learn and unlearn you dimwit! https://t.co/zVLjQDPzEz— Shaheena Attarwala شاہینہ (@RuthlessUx) October 19, 2022
