A Kerala based vlogger was recently arrested for encouraging girls to take ganja in a viral video. Following his arrest, the vlogger said that he will smoke till he dies and added that ganja runs in his blood. The incident was reported from Kochi’s  Mattancherry. The accused was identified as Francis Nevin Augustine.

Earlier this week, social media platforms were littered with videos of Francis encouraging school girls to use ganja. According to an Onmanorma report, Francis also told school girls where to find the banned substance.

Following the video going viral, an excise team was formulated who identified Francis, and further conducted searches at his home. The team was led by Mattancherry Range Inspector V S Pradeep. During the search operation, the police found two grams of ganja hidden in the accused’s garments.

Although the amount of substance found in Francis’s possession makes him eligible to get a bail, the authorities have a plan of their own. The accused will be produced in the court as he also tried to promote the usage of the banned substance on social media.

Meanwhile, at the police station, Francis equated ganja to vegetables like carrot, spinach, and cabbage. “I don’t think using it is wrong. The seeds of it fall on the ground and grow. It is a medicine for all diseases and will use it till death” he said.

The Facts of the Matter

While many Indians continue to opine that cannabis should be legalized in India, the country continues to consider cannabis, and similar narcotic as illegal substance.

As per Section 2 (iii) and (iv) of the NDPS Act, 1985, weed is defined as “ganja, that is, the flowering or fruiting tops of the cannabis plant (excluding the seeds and leaves when not accompanied by the tops), by whatever name they may be known or designated”, and thus remains illegal.
