A kid’s hilarious take on ‘relationship breaker puttu’ has gone viral on Twitter with netizens claiming it to be the cutest thing they read this week. For the unversed, puttu is a dish primarily made and consumed in South Indian states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Chennai and some parts of Karnataka. The breakfast dish is made of rice shaped in cylinders and has coconut shavings in them. Putti is primarily consumed with dal, chana (chickpea), fish and other savoury gravies.

On Twitter, a user with the handle ‘LawyerInBaking’ shared the image of an essay written by a student. “Write a paragraph on ‘The Food I Don’t Like”, read the question to which the student went all in and slammed the breakfast dish to be a ‘relationship breaker’.

“The problem is that when they serve putu after five minutes the puttu will turn into a rock and I will not eat it..”, wrote the student, describing the issues with the favourite breakfast dish of thousands of Keralites.

The Facts of the Matter

Every household in this country has a classic breakfast that graces the dining table and tiffin for children and adults almost every day. From poha, to idli, to upma, to puttu, some stable breakfasts and meals are prepared every day because they are quick to make and easy to consume. As they are made every day, often they are considered boring, and their merits get lost.

Not First Such Incident…

It should be noted that this is not the first time a South Indian breakfast dish was called out on the internet. Earlier in 2020, a British professor received massive pushback on Twitter after he called Idli ‘the most boring things in the world’.

In a subsequent tweet, he added that he appreciates other breakfast items like dosa and appam but finds idlis and appam ‘insufferable’.

Netizens, especially from South India, were outraged at the British professor’s assessment about their favourite breakfast dish and called him “clueless white boy”.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s Take on Idligate

The incident was later dubbed as ‘Idligate’, and escalated to a point that Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor also shared his take on the matter. Tharoor, in his own witty and verbose manner, wrote, “Civilisation is hard to acquire: the taste & refinement to appreciate idlis, enjoy cricket, or watch ottamthullal is not given to every mortal. Take pity on this poor man, for he may never know what Life can be.”
