In a distressing development, Kitty Kumaramangalam – who’s the wife of ex-Union Minister PR Kumaramangalam, was found murdered at her Delhi home. The 68-year-old woman, who worked as a lawyer was allegedly murdered by smothering by her washerman and two associates on July 6, Tuesday in Vasant Vihar region.

The Delhi’s Vasant Vihar region was shaken and stirred by a violent crime. Delhi has been at times labelled as the crime capital of the country, especially due to the violent crimes against women. From rapes to murders to assault cases, the national capital carries the burden of some devastating tragedies that occur from time to time.

However, the recent reports of a crime are tragic and horrific as it was inflicted on a former political leader’s wife. Such reports can instill fear in the masses as they come to a grave realization that even the most guarded people can also find themselves on the receiving end of an unfortunate tragedy.

Former Union Minister, P. Rangarajan Kumaramangalam’s life turned upside down after his wife was murdered on Tuesday night. According to reports, 68-year-old woman was smothered to death by her dhobi (washerman) and two more associates.

The Crime As It Happened

According to the police, the case is that of a murder-cum-robbery. On Tuesday night, Kumaramangalam’s regular washerman came to the former’s place at 9 PM. When the househelp opened the door to the ex-Union Minister’s home, she was overpowered by the man. The man then dragged the househelp to another room and restrained her.

Meanwhile, two more accomplices of the washerman entered the home and overpowered the Ex-Union Minister’s wife, Mrs. Kitty Kumaramangalam. They then went on to smother her with a pillow and subsequently, ended her life.

The police came to know about the incident after the house help was able to untie herself and raise the alarm.

Police Arrests the Alleged Accused

Later, the Delhi police was able to arrest one of the accused – Raju (24), who was working near Mrs. Kitty’s home. DCP (South-West district) Ingit Pratap Singh was quoted by several news platforms saying-

“We received a call about the incident at around 11 pm from her domestic help Manju. She informed that at around 9 pm, Raju, who came earlier also, came to their home and she opened the door for him. But after entering, he overpowered her and dragged her to another room.”

Accused dragged Kitty and smothered her to death

Further, Manju, the house help also alleged that Raju’s two accomplices went on to then overpower Mrs. Kitty.

“They also dragged her to another room where they smothered her to death when she tried to raise an alarm. They decamped with some money and jewellery,”

-DCP Singh said.

The DCP also added that after the house help finally managed to untie her hands, she raised an alarm and called the neighbours for help. The neighbours soon rushed to Mrs. Kitty’s home and freed the house help. Later, the police were informed by the neighbours about the entire ordeal.

Probe teams formed, Hunt for Accused Kicked-off

After the police got the lay of the land, multiple probe teams were formed and a hunt for the accused was kicked off. Meanwhile, at the scene of the crime, some briefcases were found open, which points to the fact that Mrs. Kitty was also robbed around the time she was murdered.

Accused Arrest, Bag of Clothes Recovered

Later, the police were able to arrest the 24-year-old accused Raju right from his residence in Bhanwar Singh Camp. During the investigation and interrogation, the accused also revealed the names of his other two accomplices.

DCP Ingit Singh also claimed that the hunt for the other two accomplices is on and the police recovered a bag of stolen clothes from Raju.

“We are checking what was stolen from the house. The other two men also took two bags with them,”
