In a horrifying turn of events coming straight from Kolkata, a 26-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped and further robbed of Rs. 15 lakh cash. While cases of crimes against women are arguably reported least from Kolkata among all metro cities, such reports can send a shiver down the spine of a person and can attest to the fact that no region is completely safe for women in the nation.
Trigger Warning: Rape, Violence
On July 6, an unfortunate and blood curdling incident was reported in Kolkata. A 26-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by a group of men and further, was robbed by them. The men before doing the misdeed, robbed the woman with Rs. 15 lakhs of cash she had on her and even stole jewellery that was kept at home.
Between the hours of 12 PM and 1 PM on July 6, Thursday, two or three unidentified men broke into the survivor’s house when she was alone. Allegedly, her parents had gone to work in a garment factory and had locked the door from the outside for safety. These unidentified men broke the lock and barged in.
Group of men ties women, robs her
The unidentified group of men then overpowered her and tied her up in her bedroom. They then continued with their crime and broke the almirah in the other adjacent room. After breaking upon the almirah, the men then stole Rs. 15 lakhs in cash. They further also duped the woman off the gold and silver jewelry that was kept inside the almirah.
The Nightmare Continues
While being robbed at your own home after being overpowered is a nightmare turned to reality, the woman’s world of pain still had a lot in store for her. Before the men fled, they allegedly raped the 26-year-old woman.
Accused booked under these IPC Sections
After the men fled, the survivor took to the police and filed an official complaint. The accused, who are still on the run and still remain unidentified are booked under various sections of the IPC (Indian Penal Code). The accused are booked under Section 450 (House-trespass in order to commit offence punishable with imprisonment for life), Section 455 (Lurking house-trespass or house-breaking after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), Section 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), Section 394 (Voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) and Section 376 – 2(G) (committing gang rape).
CCTV Footage monitored, samples collected: Police
After the police filed a complaint and booked the accused under the multiple sections of the IPC, an investigation was reported to have initiated by the detective department.
“The case is being investigated by the detective department. The woman has lodged a complaint. Every angle is being probed,”
a police officer said, as quoted by news media.
“Our forensic team has collected samples from the flat and checking the CCTV footage of the area,” another officer said was quoted saying.
Psychological Assistance Provided
The police also said claimed that appropriate psychological assistance is being provided to the survivor and that they hope that the Court will let them record the women’s statement after she recovers. Further, the Kolkata Police also said that a probe is also in the pipeline to ascertain why there was a huge sum of cash and jewellery kept in the house.
It should be noted that according to National Crime Records Bureau, Kolkata recorded the least number of sexual assault cases on women in 2019, As per its report, in 2019, Kolkata registered 14 cases of sexual assault while not a single case of harassment came from the city.
