MacKenzie Scott announced her marriage with Dan Jewett, a science teacher at the Seattle School, after her divorce from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. After her divorce, MacKenzie  Scott became the richest woman in the world in 2019. According to Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index, at the time of Scott’s divorce, she surpassed L’Oreal heiress Francoise Meyers and reported a net worth of $68 billion. As of January 2021, MacKenzie has a net worth of $5.7 billion, which puts her in the third position of the wealthiest woman in the world. She is also the 20th wealthiest person in the world overall.

The news came after MacKenzie’s husband Jewett posted a letter to the philanthropy nonprofit organization Giving Pledge on Saturday, 6th March 2021. The science teacher from the USA said how he was “grateful for the exceptional privilege it will be to partner in giving away assets with the potential to do so much good when shared.” Meanwhile, MacKenzie, a published novelist, edited her author bio on Amazon which now reads, “She lives in Seattle with her four children and her husband, Dan.”

In his letter to the Giving Pledge, Jewett wrote, “In a stroke of happy coincidence, I am married to one of the most generous and kind people I know — and joining her in a commitment to pass on an enormous financial wealth to serve others.” In the letter, Dan described himself as a teacher for the most part of his life. Currently, Jewett teaches at the Seattle’s Lakeside School, which boasts a strong alumni presence with the likes of Bill Gates, and the children of Jeff Bezos and his ex-wife MacKenzie  Scott.

What might have been wholly trivial news, is significant because of the unusual resources at MacKenzie’s disposal- $53 billion, according to Forbes- and how she has been giving it away to philanthropic organizations since getting that fortune. Interestingly enough, MacKenzie has never remained anonymous in her philanthropic efforts. Last year, Scott took to Medium where she announced how she will be giving away $6 billion in gifts and philanthropic grants.

In 2020, MacKenzie  wrote in one of her Medium posts, “I began work to complete my pledge with the belief that my life had yielded two assets that could be of particular value to others: the money these systems helped deliver to me, and a conviction that people who have experience with inequities are the ones best equipped to design solutions.”

The way MacKenzie has been making philanthropic efforts puts her at a unique place in the world of philanthropy crowded by the likes of Bill and Melinda Gates, Warren Buffet, Michael Bloomberg and more. Although she does not have the decade’s worth of experience that Gates or Bloomberg possess, the speed at which she chose to make the world a better place by her philanthropic efforts makes her a force of positive impact in the world.

MacKenzie knows how each and every individual in the world comes with unique gifts they can offer, and also astutely aware of how she possesses a disproportionate amount of money. In her statement announcing her marriage to Dan Jewett, she also touched upon her approach towards philanthropy and said, “My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful. It will take time and effort and care. But I won’t wait. And I will keep at it until the safe is empty. “

MacKenzie, in 2019, signed the Giving Pledge, in which she pledged to give away most of her fortune to charities across the world over her lifetime. It should be noted that the pledge is legally non-binding. Later in 2020, Scott also announced that she donated $1.7 billion to 116 non-profits that focused on LGBTQ+ equality, climate change, and racial equality. In December the same year, Scott shared how she donated $4.15 billion to 384 more organizations that provided support to people who were deeply impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Her charitable efforts totaled the sum of $5.8 billion in 2020, which was one of the biggest philanthropic efforts by a private individual that year.

Meanwhile, American online retail giant Amazon’s founder Bezos issued a statement saying, “Dan is such a great guy, and I’m happy and excited for the both of them.”

MacKenzie  Scott was married to Jeff Bezos for 25 years. The power couple divorced in 2019 and Scott’s share in the divorce settlement was 4% of Amazon’s stock. After the divorce, Bezos was the talk of the tabloids for hanging out with fellow business magnates and celebrities on his yachts, while MacKenzie chose to stay out of the limelight.
