Background
According to a study conducted by Dr. Sanjay Agarwal at AIIMS, Delhi, there are at least 1,500 people per million that suffer from chronic kidney diseases. Furthermore, the study suggested that per million population there are about 400 people that suffer from end-stage chronic kidney disease.
On one hand, there are people who are in desperate need of a kidney transplant. On the other side, in a country like India where economic disparity is rampant, there are people who are willing to trade their organs in order to financially secure their present and future.
This grim situation becomes a breeding ground of illegal organ trade – an issue that will continue thriving in the nation, and till a centre-run organ registry like US is not put in place to curb it.

Nepalese Singer Lays Her Trap
Cut to 2020, Kalpana had to move to Ambernath, Mumbai. Till this time, she and Badi used to stay in touch on Facebook and chatted occasionally. During one such conversation, Kalpana confided to Rabina about the dire financial situation she was in. It was at this time that Rabina started laying her trap.
Rabina told Kalpana that she was residing in Delhi and had earned Rs. 4 crores for selling one of her kidneys. She further explained that anyone can live a healthy life with just one kidney. She continued coaxing Kalpana to make the grave decision of saying yes to selling her kidney.
Victim Agrees to Arrangement, Accused Puts Forth Condition
The victim, who was already in financial crunch, agreed to the arrangement. Meanwhile, Rabina put a condition forth which stated that Kalpana would first have to pay Rs. 8 lakhs so that she is eligible for being an organ donor.
A TOI report quoted a police officer involved in the matter saying, “That’s how Badi tried to coax Magar by telling her that she too could earn big money by agreeing to sell one of her kidneys, and told that that she would first have to pay a few lakhs and then she would be flown abroad and he kidney would be harvested.”
Victim Sells Land, Provides Money to Accused
By selling some of her land in Nepal, the victim somehow arranged the Rs. 8 lakhs and transferred the same to Arvind’s account. Later, the accused started ducking Kalpana’s phone calls who wanted her share of agreed money. When Kalpana tried reaching out to her on Facebook and WhatsApp, she was blocked.
Later, a social worker from Ambernath extended his support and Kalpana filed a complaint to the police. According to Shivaji Nagar police station senior inspector, a team will be formed who would go to Nepal and arrest Rabina Badi.
