Those were divided amongst the devas and asuras. Before “Amrit” a bowl full of most venomous Poison called “Halahal” was emerged from the sea. The poison was so dreadful that it could destroy the whole creation. But, in order to save the earth from that Venom, Lord Shiva drank that poison. Goddess Parvati Choked His throat to stop it from spreading in the body, though the poison was stopped from spreading but, venom left a blue mark on Shiva’s Neck and it gave Shiva a new name “Neelkanth”. This was one of the stories written in our Puranas. There are many other beliefs in Hinduism about Shiva and other deities.
