In a shocking incident reported from Jharkhand, Mahindra Finance’s loan recovery agents allegedly mowed down a pregnant woman by a tractor, following which the group issued a statement, claiming the incident to be a “terrible tragedy”. Anand Mahindra, chairperson of Mahindra and Mahindra himself took to Twitter and wrote, “This is a terrible tragedy. I strongly support @anishshah21’s statement. Our hearts go out to the family in this time of grief.”

Earlier, Anish Shah, MD of Mahindra and Mahindra, had also taken to the microblogging platform and shared the group’s statement. “We are deeply saddened and disturbed by the Hazaribagh incident. A human tragedy has occurred. We will investigate this incident from all aspects and will also undertake an examination of the practice of using third-party collection agencies that has been in existence”, the statement read.

The horrific incident occurred earlier on Thursday in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh district. The victim of the incident was the daughter of a specially-abled farmer. The victim’s family alleged that recovery agents from Mahindra finance company came to her house and an argument broke out between the farmer and the agents.

After the argument, the farmer’s daughter, who was three-month pregnant, was crushed under the tractor wheels. A case of murder has been registered against four persons, including the recovery agents.

The Facts of the Matter

While taking a loan from financial institutions has become simpler than ever, falling into debt-trap has also become easier than ever. There has been a recent spate of suicides committed by people following online or physical harassment by loan recovery agents.

Recently, a pregnant woman in Jharkhand was allegedly mowed down by Mahindra finance recovery agents. The woman was crushed under the wheels of a tractor after an argument had broken out between her father and the recovery agents. The issue has triggered statements from the group, which claims to revisit idea of using third-party recovery agents.

4 Recovery Agents Barged Into Woman’s Home

According to Hazaribag Superintendent of Police Manoj Ratan Chote, four men had barged into a woman’s home to recover her tractor after her family had failed to repay the loan. The loan was allegedly taken from Mahindra Finance. An argument broke out between the woman’s father, a specially abled father, and the recovery agents.

When the woman tried to stop the men, they ran over her with a tractor and fled the scene. Reports have stated that the primary accused identified himself to be the Zonal Manager of the company.

A case of murder has been registered against the four accused and investigation has been kicked off in the matter.

Mahindra Group Calls Incident “Human Tragedy”

Following the incident, Mahindra Group chairman Anish Shah took to Twitter and shared the company’s statement. Calling the incident a “human tragedy”, Anish assured support to authorities for investigation.

“We are deeply saddened and disturbed by the Hazaribagh incident. A human tragedy has occurred. We will investigate this incident from all aspects and will also undertake an examination of the practice of using third-party collection agencies that has been in existence,” the group’s statement read.

“We will extend all possible support to the authorities during the investigation into this tragic incident and, above all, we stand with the family in this moment of grief,” the statement further added.
