A man who is allergic to orgasm, had to abstain from getting intimate by avoiding getting into a relationship for 9 years. Like most allergies, the arguably unlucky man suffered from symptoms which included sneezing, muscle weakness, cough, and fever whenever he got ejaculated.

The man’s strange case was part of a study done by doctors who ended up helping the man treat the problems thanks to over-the-counter antihistamine.

Aforementioned case study in question is set to come in the Urology Case Reports’ November issue. As per the researchers who completed the study, there have been less than 60 such cases. The strange condition has a name as well – POIS (Postorgasmic illness syndrome).

As per the case study, the 27-year-old man, who is otherwise completely healthy, had his first episode when he was 18. After having orgasms, he started experiencing flu-like illness, and even suffered from hives that broke out on his forearms.

Due to the rarity of the condition, the man saw medical specialists from different field, including otolaryngologist, infectious disease specialist, and allergists of different kinds. Meanwhile, to save himself from suffering from such reactions, he abstained from any intimate activities, and avoided getting into relationships.

Doctors suspected that an infection in his early life may have set a chain reaction that caused his immune system to be extra sensitive to semen.

The Facts of the Matter

Due to an unusual and extremely rare condition, a man had to abstain getting intimate due to which he avoided getting into a relationship for most of a decade. The man’s unfortunate and atypical case was brought to notice recently by some doctors in the form of a case study, which is set to be published in a paper.

The otherwise healthy 27-year-old man suffers from an extremely rare condition called POIS (Postorgasmic illness syndrome). The condition is so rare, that less than 60 such cases are found in medical literature.

What is POIS?

Men who suffer with POIS experience wide range of symptoms after ejaculating which are strangely similar to having an allergy.

This includes runny nose, fatigue, cold and cough, fever, and in rare cases, even memory problems. Reportedly such symptoms usually appear seconds after an orgasm, and can last from two days to a week.

First Episode, Avoiding Relationships

The case study described the case of the 27-year-old who had his first episode when he was 18. Like other sufferers of POIS, he too suffered flu-like illness, and also experienced hives that broke out along his forearms.

Due to the extreme rarity of his condition, he met several medical practitioners over different fields, including allergists, infectious disease specialist, and otolaryngologist (ENT specialist). While the doctors tried to help him, he continued to abstain from having any romantic relationships.

What Caused the Condition?

It should be noted that the cause of POIS is still widely debated. In the case of 27-year-old man, doctors have speculated that as he suffered from epididymitis when he was young, it set of a chain-reaction which caused the man’s immune system to be highly-sensitive to semen.

The Treatment that Worked

As there’s no official cause of the condition, there’s no official course of treatment as well. However, his doctors put him on antihistamine, which are over-the-counter drugs used for treatment of allergies.

The man was made to take an antihistamine called fexofenadine, which somehow worked like charm, relieving him of 90% of such symptoms.

While the drugs are easy to access, medical practitioners recommend that a patient researches appropriately to rely on them.
