A mild earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale struck Faridabad in Haryana on Sunday afternoon, sending tremors across Delhi and neighboring regions. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was located 9 km east of Faridabad at a depth of 5 km. The tremors were felt around 4:08 pm in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida and other parts of the National Capital Region.

Panic Among Residents as Buildings Shake

As buildings shook from the sudden tremors, panic gripped residents who rushed out of their homes and offices. Videos on social media showed scared people running out of shaking buildings and multi-story apartments. The Delhi Police issued an advisory asking people to stay away from buildings, trees and electric poles during an earthquake. Citizens were also advised against using elevators and to dial emergency number 112 in case of any emergency.

Second Earthquake in Delhi Region This Month

This is the second earthquake to hit the Delhi-NCR region this month. On October 3, strong tremors were felt across north India, including Delhi, after a series of earthquakes struck Nepal. The biggest of these was a 6.2 magnitude quake centered in western Nepal. No major damage was reported in Delhi due to the recent quakes, but experts warn that complacency can be dangerous.

Need to Build Earthquake Resilient Infrastructure

Experts have underlined the need for earthquake resilient construction and retrofitting of old structures in Delhi-NCR to minimize damage when a high intensity quake strikes. As the region lies in seismic zone IV, buildings need to comply with earthquake-resistant features as per building bylaws. However, lax implementation of norms remains a concern. The impact of earthquakes can be reduced with proper disaster preparedness and public awareness.

Social Media Buzz Around Tremors

As soon as the tremors hit Delhi-NCR on Sunday, social media was abuzz with netizens sharing their experiences. Twitter and Facebook were flooded with posts about buildings shaking and scared citizens rushing out to open areas for safety. “Massive tremors in Delhi again!”, “That was scary”, “Oh no, earthquake!” – were some of the reactions on social media. Delhi government’s disaster management agencies were prompt in reassuring citizens that there was no need to panic as the tremors were mild.

The Sunday’s earthquake, though only moderate in intensity, triggered panic among Delhi-NCR residents who are now more fearful about living in seismic zone after experiencing two tremors within a span of two weeks. The authorities need to ramp up preparedness and public awareness programmes for earthquakes to avoid largescale damage when a high-intensity quake hits the region. With advanced warning systems and resilient infrastructure, loss of life and property can be minimized. But continued complacency will only lead to a disaster of catastrophic proportions in case of a major earthquake.
