Recently in Tokyo Olympics 2020, Mirabai Chanu carved history by winning India’s first medal of the Tokyo Olympics when she bagged silver in women’s 49kg weightlifting event. After the win, Mirabai Chanu raised a wish of eating Pizza, which was fulfilled by Dominos. Domino’s then made a big announcement of “Lifelong Free Pizza” for Chanu which left netizens in Awe.

The Interview and Chanu’s Wish

In an interview with NDTV, Chanu said that the first thing she wanted to do was eat pizza. She said that “First of all, I will go and have a pizza. It has been a long time since I ate it. I will eat a lot today.”

Domino’s Pizza announced that they would be treating Ms Chanu to “free pizzas for life”. Domino’s Pizza wrote, “Mirabai Chanu, Congratulations on bringing the medal home! You brought the dreams of a billion+ Indians to life and we couldn’t be happier to treat you to FREE Domino’s pizza for life. Congratulations again!”

Chanu Creates History

Chanu becomes the second ever Indian female weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to win an Olympic weightlifting medal. Chanu bagged the silver lifting a total 202 kg – 87 kg in snatch and 115 kg in clean and jerk.

She gracefully lifted 84 kg and 87 kg in her first two attempts in snatch category but unfortunately missed in her final in which she targeted 89 kg. Similar flow followed In the clean and jerk section that saw her lifting 110 kg and 115 kg in the first two attempts.

In her final attempt she couldn’t lift 117 kg but by then, she had already made place for silver. Chanu broke down after realising she has secured a medal and hugged her coach in jubilation.

Chanu’s Efforts for the Win and Her Future Vision

Expressing her happiness Chanu said that her target was to win a medal at the Tokyo Games and hence she made several compromises to make her dream come true. She stated that-

“I have worked quite hard for this and made sacrifices. My target was to win a medal at Tokyo Olympic.”

Her coach Vijay Kumar was very warmed and pleased and also hoped that the result will inspire more to take up weightlifting and bring medals for country in the future.

CEO Supported the Announcement and Praised Chanu’s Achievement

Pratik Pota, CEO of Jubilant Foodworks, the company that operates the pizza giant chain in India, also tweeted in this context and said that, “Even as we prepare to give #MirabaiChanu a hero’s welcome and let her eat pizzas to her heart’s content, our Imphal team went to her house to congratulate her family with what else but Domino’s Pizza @dominos_india. Congratulations @mirabai_chanu you have done India proud!”
