The roots of Mother’s Day go as far as US, when a woman called Anna Jarvis wanted a specific day to be observed because her own mother had expressed the desire that mothers should be appreciated and celebrated.

When her mother passed away, Anna commemorated the first Woman’s Day in 1908. Gradually Jarvis’ efforts were noticed by federations across the world, and the day got by picked up by other countries to appreciate and celebrate mothers.

5 Bollywood Films that Celebrate Motherhood

Mother India

Mother India stars Nargis as Radha, a poor peasant who throughout the course of the film fought injustice & adversities while keeping her honour intact.

The film’s protagonist is a metaphorical representation of Indian nation itself that for years faced calamities, slavery and tragedies. If the film’s revenue is adjusted against inflation, it is one of the highest grossing Bollywood films of all time.

Mother India was also the first Bollywood film that was nominated for an Academy Award for Best International Film.

Mom is a revenge drama on the outside, but within the film there’s a crux that celebrates courage, wisdom and patience, a trinity that makes mothers who they are. The film has an ensemble cast of strong actors like Sridevi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Adarsh Gourav, Akshaye Khanna and Sajal Aly.

The film tracks the journey of a seemingly harmless mother (Sridevi) who goes to lengths to bring justice to her daughter (Sajal Aly).

The fantastic performances of Siddiqui, Sri Devi and Akshaye Khanna elevates an already strong story. Add to that the haunting background score by Academy Award winner A.R. Rahman and you’ve got a winner.

Secret Superstar

There are a couple of things that makes Secret Superstar special. First is that it was backed by prolific actor-producer Aamir Khan, who’s not known for vouching for many films. So, if Khan puts his finger on a certain film, it could may as well be considered Midas touch. Another thing that makes the film special is that it is one of the most profitable films of all time. The film ended up making Rs. 965 crores worldwide against its Rs. 15 crore budget.

The film revolves around the relationship between a young talented 15-year-old girl who with her mother fights every odd to finally spread open her wings and show her talent to the world the film stars Meher Vij, Zaira Wasim and Aamir Khan in a special appearance.

Nil Battey Sannata

Starring Swara Bhaskar, Pankaj Tripathi and Ratna Pathak Shah, Nil Battey Sannata is a heartwarming story of a mother taking up a challenge herself and in the process of completing it, breaks all the societal shackles.

In the film Bhaskar stars as Chanda, a maid who works tirelessly for her daughter Apu. But when she sees her daughter immature attitude, she enrolls herself in Apu’s class and learns maths, science and other subjects.

English Vinglish

This is the second film in this list that stars prolific Bollywood actress Sri Devi. Devi stars as Shashi, a devoted wife and a caring mother. She is woken up from her deep slumber in an incident where she’s mocked jokingly for her poor English by her husband at a public event.

After the event she realized how in the process of being a mother and wife, forgot being ‘Shashi’, the woman that she really was. And thus, she decides to join an English-speaking class to gain her self-respect and become a role model for her daughter.
