In a shocking development that has stunned cricket fans across the world, M.S. Dhoni has stepped down as the captain of CSK ahead of the IPL 2022. After the news broke, netizens on Twitter reacted in their own way with Ravindra Jadeja replacing Dhoni and now given the reins of the four-time champion team.
On Thursday, the Kasi Viswanathan-headed franchise made the announcement on its website and issued a statement which read, “MS Dhoni has decided to hand over the leadership of Chennai Super Kings and picked Ravindra Jadeja to lead the team. Jadeja, who has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2012, will only be the third player to lead CSK”. In a bid to not give air to sparks of speculations regarding any tiff within the team, the franchise in its statement further added, “Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond”.
After the announcement Dhoni and CSK fans took to Twitter and left tribute for the former captain who will leave big shoes to fill for Ravindra Jadeja.
The Facts of the Matter
As the temperature in the country surges past the sweaty-forty, its citizens are all set to drench themselves in the various colours of their favourite franchises set to play for the IPL 2022. Ahead of the 15h edition of the Indian Premere League, a bombshell development was reported on Thursday with former Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni stepping down as the team’s captain and handing the baton to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.
“Will Continue to Represent CSK”: CSK Issues Statement
The announcement was made by CSK on its social media platforms. The franchise in its statement said, “MS Dhoni has decided to hand over the leadership of Chennai Super Kings and picked Ravindra Jadeja to lead the team. Jadeja, who has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2012, will only be the third player to lead CSK. Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond.”
It should be noted that MS Dhoni has served as CSK’s full-time captain since the team was conceptualized and played its first encounter in 2008. On the rare occasions when Dhoni had to step down, his partner-in-crime Suresh Raine used to lead the team.
Dhoni’s Recent Failures as Batter in IPL
It should be noted that MS Dhoni has failed to let his bat do the talking in the last few years. After his retirement in 2020, which came right after the ICC World Cup 2019, Dhoni failed to contribute with bat in the next few IPLs. In IPL 2020, his batting average remained at 25 while in 2021, his average stood at an underwhelming 16.29. Meanwhile, his strike-rate has also diminished over the years. In 2018, his striker rate was 134. This dropped to 116.28 in 2020 and 106 in 2021.
The Rich Legacy of MSD, Second Most Successful IPL Skipper
Even though he has been underwhelming at best in the last few years, Dhoni will leave Jadeja with big shoes to fill. Since 2008, Dhoni has captained in 204 games in which he led his team to victory in 121 games with a percentage of 59.60%. More importantly, under his reign, the Yellow Army won 4 IPL Trophies – 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021.
MS Dhoni will also go down in the history of IPL as the second-best captain. He is only surpassed by Mumbai Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who has led his team to victory’s side 75 times in 129 encounters with a win percentage of almost 60%.
“End of an Era” Netizens React to News
After the news of MS Dhoni stepping down as CSK captain broke, fans took to Twitter and congratulated him for the successful years he had.
We use the expression "end of an era" very loosely sometimes. But Dhoni giving up the captaincy of @ChennaiIPL is truly the end of an era for all those loyal fans with whom he forged a relationship of the kind very few have.

MS Dhoni started his captaincy stinct with a trophy and ended it the same way. Poetic. pic.twitter.com/iX0NhkAGKV

MS Dhoni has left a legacy behind which is incredibly tough for anyone to reach. 12 seasons as CSK captain, 9 finals and 4 trophies. Mad success as a captain, one of the mastermind of the game.

It is going to be so weird not seeing Dhoni and Kohli walking out for CSK vs RCB toss. Used to be a wholesome moment.

Dhoni leaving captaincy after winning the the IPL trophy is typical vintage Dhoni. Going only after the job is done.
