In a horrific incident reported from Mumbai, as many as 6 minors allegedly sexually assaulted a 13-year-old boy, filmed the act, and were later booked under the POCSO Act. The incident was reported from Goregaon Mumbai and the assault began earlier in March and continued till June. The victim was allegedly assaulted by one of the accused minors while other recorded the entire ordeal on video.

The police told media that the accused and the victim knew each other and lived in the same chawl in Mumbai. The accused used to blackmail the victim with the alleged videos, and continue their assault on multiple occasions at isolated places. The victim was threatened by the accused minors that he would be beaten up if he raises an alert and reveals what he is subjected to.

The matter came to the fore after the video of the horrific abuse was shared across WhatsApp groups and reached the victim’s uncle somehow. The victim’s uncle took to the police and the accused were booked under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, and POCSO Act, along with sections pertaining to the IT Act.

The accused will now be produced to the Juvenile Justice Board soon.

According to Mumbai Police’s report from 2021, 96% of POCSO accused knew the victims and vice versa.

The Facts of the Matter

Multiple cases of POCSO cases have emerged from Mumbai, Maharashtra recently, shedding light on the fact that there is no respite for the city’s children that are vulnerable to sexual abuse.

In one such cases, six minors were recently booked under POCSO Act for allegedly abusing a 13-year-old boy and filming the abuse.

Accused Aged Between 14-16

According to reports, the Mumbai Police arrested all the accused involved in the matter. All the 6 accused are aged between 14 to 16. The accused were charged under multiple sections of POCSO, IPC and IT Act.

Victim & Accused Lived in Same Chawl

Police told media that the accused and the victim lived in the same chawl and knew each other. The alleged assaults started in March earlier this year when one of the accused sexually assaulted the minor and another recorded the abuse.

The accused continued the assaults till June and blackmailed the victim with the video of the assaults. The accused also threatened the 13-year-old minor that they would beat him up if he tells anything at home.

How the Matter Came to the Fore?

The matter only came to the fore after the alleged video of the abuse was broadcasted across WhatsApp groups and somehow reached the victim’s uncle. It was the victim’s uncle who approached the police and the accused were later arrested in Goregaon. The accused will be now produced before the juvenile board for further actions.

96% of POCSO Victims Knew Accused: Mumbai Police

According to Mumbai Police’s report from 2021, 96% of the POCSO victims knew their accused and vice versa. Further, it was showed that there was a rise in cases of rape against children when compared against 2019.

As per the report, as many as 524 rape cases were filed under the POCSO Act which was a 15% rise when compared against 2020. Of the total cases, only 20 accused were unknown to the victims. In 299 such cases, accused were either a friend, social media friend, and incidents of rape under marriage promise.

The data also revealed that there were 56 cases where the accused were neighbours, followed by 37 cases where the accused were family friends and relatives.
