Mumbai is on high alert after a recent development. On Thursday evening the Mumbai Police found an abandoned SUV (sports utility vehicle) with explosive material and threat letter parked near the house of Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani. According to the police, the explosive material was not part of a completely assembled device.

On Thursday evening, the Mumbai Police were alerted of a suspicious vehicle abandoned on Carmichael Road. The law enforcement authorities jumped to swift action and alerted the BDDS (Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad) and other relevant police teams. According to police, the abandoned vehicle had a fake number plate. Moreover, the registration number was the same as that of Mukesh Ambani’s security detail personnel as per reports.

The Mumbai Police Public Relations Officer or PRO, released a statement saying that only 20 gelatin sticks were found inside the car and no assembled explosive device was found.  Chaitanya Siriprolu, Mumbai Police Public Relations Officer said, “A suspicious vehicle was found on Carmichael Road today (Thursday) evening under the limits of Gamdevi police station. The police were alerted. The BDDS team and other police teams reached the spot immediately, examined the vehicle and found some explosive material (gelatin) inside. It is not an assembled explosive device. Further investigation is going on.”

He also added, “A letter has been found inside the said vehicle. The registration number displayed on the said vehicle matches the registration number of a vehicle in Mukesh Ambani’s security detail. The said vehicle has been seized by police for investigation.”

On further probe into the matter, the CCTV footage revealed that the SUV was parked near Mukes Ambani’s house Antilia around 1 AM, Friday. In the CCTV footage, two vehicles were seen- an Innova and a Scorpio. The Scorpio driver was seen parking the vehicle near Ambani’s house.

Later, Shambhuraj Desai, Minister of state for home, gave a statement saying that the matter of the case is being taken seriously and justice will be served to the culprits behind the incident. He also added that if in case there is a need for additional security for the Ambani family, they shall be provided the same.

Mukesh Ambani is the chairman of Reliance Industries Limited and lives in one of the world’s most luxurious homes named Antilia. Antilia is a 27-story building laid out on 4,00,000 square feet of land in Mumbai’s Cumballa Hill area. The epitome of luxury is designed by Perkins and Will and has 3 helipads, a 168-car garage, a 50-seat theatre equipped with modern entertainment technologies, swimming pools, temples, a snow room, and more.

The alarming incident comes less than a month after an IED (improvised explosive device) blast shook the national capital. Last month, the Israeli Embassy in Delhi was attacked with a very low-intensity IED. The blast occurred near Vijay Chowk where Indian President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior government officials had gathered for the Beating Retreat ceremony. No injuries or fatalities were recorded post the blast.
