Trigger Warning: Rape
Much like the life-cycle of most gangrape cases, the Mysuru gangrape case too had similar stages to it. It involved the heinous crime being committed, opposition politicizing the issue by criticizing the law-and-order situation of the state, the rape survivor blamed by authorities, and the accused finally arrested. All of this, within the span of 4 days.

The Facts of the Matter
On August 28, 5 people were nabbed by the police in connection with the recent Mysuru gangrape case which has shaken and stirred the country. The Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP) Praveen Sood claimed that another accused is still absconding and the police are on the lookout for him.
What Do We Know About The Accused?
Giving a small brief about the arrested men, the DGP shared that all the 5 persons are from Tamil Nadu’s Tirupur. All 5 of them worked as daily wage labourors and owing to their professions, they used to visit Mysuru for work. All of them worked to make their ends meet by driving, painting, carpentering, etc.
A shocking revelation in the arrest came in the form of a juvenile also being reported to be the part of the accused men who were arrested. DGP Sood was quoted in an NDTV report saying that one of the accused is a, “..17-year-old. We are not sure”.
Juvenile To Be Tried in Regular Court
According to DGP Sood, the yet to be verified juvenile will still be tried in the regular court as juveniles are tried in regular courts in cases pertaining to such serious crimes. For the unversed, those aged between 16-18 are also tried in regular courts if they are accused of rape or murder, a law which was amended in the Indian constitution as an aftermath to the Nirbhaya gangrape case.
Revelations Made so Far
Earlier on Tuesday evening, a 22-year-old female student was traveling in Mysuru, somewhere in Chamundi Hills. The duo was attacked by the group of accused, who first intended to rob them, but later took the woman to a different spot and gangraped her. The accused were drunk and had also thrashed the male friend of the rape survivor.
Reportedly, the goons also made a video of the incident and demanded Rs. 3 lakhs from the duo, and threatened that if they won’t pay up, they would make it viral. When the duo claimed that they won’t be able to do so, the goons thrashed them further.
Mysuru University Passes Draconian Law, Order Revoked
Meanwhile, after the tragic incident, the Mysuru University invoked a ban on movement by female students past 6.30 student on Friday, August 27. Further, the order, passed after oral police instructions, had forbidden entry to public spots such as the Kukkarahalli lake, and other university campus spots that are frequented by students.
The order received massive outrage by students across the university, and the order was revoked a day later. News agency ANI quoted Karnataka Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Ashwath Narayan, saying, “In the wake of the tragic incident in Mysore, I informed VCs to withdraw the order as soon as circular issued by University of Mysore forbidding student movement at university campus after 6.30 pm. Accordingly, it was withdrawn.”
