Law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad launched a digital version of the voter identity card on the occasion of the 11th National Voters’ Day. This electronic version of the voter ID card is termed as e-EPIC (Electronic Electoral Photo Identity Card). The first of its kind voter ID card, e-EPIC can be downloaded on a phone or a computer.

The e-EPIC allows Indian voters to download the soft copy of their voter ID card directly from Election Commission’s website. Previously, only other identity cards such as the Aadhar card, PAN card, driver’s license were available in the digital format. The e-EPIC will be a PDF version of the electoral photo identity card that will be non-editable. A voter can just download the digital file through their devices and print it if they choose to do so.

The voter can also keep the card stored safely on their phones or upload it on the DigiLocker. DigiLocker is a government operated cloud-based storage platform where an Indian citizen can safely store their authentic documents such as the Aadhar card, driver’s license, academic mark sheets, etc.

National Voters’ Day: Why does India celebrate this day on January 25?

Every year on January 25, India celebrates the National Voters’ Day to mark the foundation day of the Election Commission of India.  The Election Commission of India was founded on 25th January 1950.

In 2011, a union cabinet meeting head by former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh accepted the Law Ministry’s proposal to choose 25 Jan as the National Voters’ Day

For the 11th National Voters’ Day, Indian President Shri Ram Nath Kovind will take part in the celebration ceremony virtually. The President will also launch Election Commission’s Web Radio: ‘Hello Voters’. Additionally, he will confer awards to state and district level officers for Best Electoral Practices.

The theme for this year’s National Voters’ Day is “Making Our Voters Empowered, Vigilant, Safe and Informed”.
