In a shocking incident, a newborn baby was found in an Air Mauritius plane’s toilet bin. The authorities confirmed that a 20-year-old mother gave birth in the flight before abandoning the baby. According to reports, the flight staff made the startling discovery while they were carrying customary check after the travelers had departed. After the baby was discovered, the authorities quickly rushed it to the hospital for immediate treatment. Meanwhile, after the 20-year-old woman was interrogated, she denied abandoning a baby. However, when she underwent a medical examination, it was confirmed that she was indeed the mother.
The Facts of the Matter
Most flight attending crew have experiences of receiving things that passengers leave behind in the plane. From valuable headphones, smartphones and jewllwery, to passports, flight attendants have recovered it all, and then some. But recently, the crew of an Air Mauritius Plane made a startling discovery when it found an abandoned newborn baby that was crying in the toilet bin of the plane.
Baby Discovered by Air Mauritius Crew
The incident happened on January 1 when the Air Mauritius plane was arrived from Madagascar to the Sir Ramgoolam International airport. Reportedly, the baby was discovered when the attending crew was doing a routine check after the plane had landed. The baby was soon rushed to the hospital to receive treatment.
The mother of the baby is a 20-year-old woman from Madagascar. The woman was suspected to have given birth mid-flight. Although she initially denied to have been carrying a baby or giving a birth, medical examination results proved her otherwise and the suspicion of the authorities was confirmed.
Mother Put Under Police Surveillance, Baby Doing Fine
Later, the woman was put under police surveillance at the hospital she underwent medical examination. She is reported to be scheduled for questioning by the authorities once she is be discharged from hospital. The authorities are also planning to book her under charges of abandoning a newborn. It should be noted that the girl has come to Mauritius on a two-year permit.
Similar Incident Happened in 2020
While one may consider the incident as horrific, it should be noted that this is not the first time a discovery of such a nature was made. Back in October 2020, a newborn baby girl was found in a plastic bag dumped inside a trashcan at the departures lounge of the Hamad International Airport, Qatar.
The Qatar government’s communication office stated that the baby was recovered from a toilet where she was “concealed in a plastic bag and buried under garbage”.
Women Were Forced to Go “Invasive” Checks, Mother Identified
The horrific incident escalated further when in a bid to find the mother of the abandoned child, several women from across different flights were forced to take an “invasive” medical examination.
The strategy received massive pushback with Australia’s Foreign Minister claiming that 18 female passengers, including 13 Australian women were forced to go through the invasive checks. The Qatar government itself called the strategy by the airline “offensive” and “grossly inappropriate”.
In November 2021, Qatar claimed to have identified the mother of the baby. The prosecutors claimed that the woman belonged to “Asian country” and had fled to a foreign country after she dumped the infant.
