Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi suggested the name of next senior Judge after him, SA Bobde to assume the office of CJi after his retirement in November 2017.
Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi is set to retire next month on 17th November 2018. However, he has two jobs to do primarily before he leaves the office. One is that he wishes to conclude more than 3 decades long Ayodhya Land Dispute case and the second one is to recommend a successor to his chair.
CJI Ranjan Gogoi sworn as the 46th Chief Justice of India on October 3, 2018, and is set to retire from his post on November 17, 2019. Hence, the chair will be succeeded by another senior Judge from the apex court. As per recent reports, chief justice Ranjan Gogoi has gone by the convention to recommend SA Bobde’s name for the next senior judge after him as successor.
Sharad Arvind Bobde comes from the city of Nagpur and is currently holds the position of a judge in the Supreme Court of India and a former Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court. He is also the Chancellor of Maharashtra National Law University, Mumbai and Maharashtra National Law University, Nagpur. Justice Bobde is due to retire on 23 April 2021. He has been as the Justice at the Apex court for 8 years.
Justice Bobde has completed his graduation from SFS College, Nagpur and studied Law from Nagpur University in 1978. After that, he enrolled as an advocate on 13 September 1978 and practised at the Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court. He became Senior Advocate at Bombay High Court in 1998, after 20 years of his experience. Within 2 years, he got an appointment as an additional judge of Bombay High Court in the year 2000. In 2012, he joined MP High court as Chief Justice and then elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court of India in 2013.
As per the information obtained by Press Trust of India from official sources, on Friday, CJI Ranjan Gogoi has sent a letter of recommendation to the Centre’s Ministry of Law and Justice, recommending Justice S A Bobde as his successor. Justice Bobde is the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court after Gogoi.
