If you were frustratingly trying to scroll through your favourite photo sharing app, no it wasn’t just you. Users across the world complained of Instagram being down for several hours on September 2. The issues ranged from people not being able to log in, to not being able to send DMs, to not being able to refresh their feeds. However, the functionality was restored as of 6.30 PM Indian Standard Time.

In a serious case of who watches the watchmen, netizens were baffled when they weren’t able to share their favourite memes about their favourite photo sharing platform suffering an outage on the same platform. On September 2, Facebook owned Instagram suffered a massive outage, owning to which, social media activities were stalled and Twitter was flooded with complaints and memes.

The Facts of the Matter

According to Down Detector, a website that tracks outages of major websites across the world, the problem started occurring right before noon, Indian time, but spiked after the noon and continued well into the evening. The website also indicated that not just Instagram, but both Facebook and WhatsApp were showing issues, suggesting that there could be an issue with the company’s server itself.

All Functionalities of Instagram Suffer

Interestingly enough, both the application and the website of Instagram were down for users across the world. Further, the outage didn’t affect all the functionalities of the platform. While at times functionality of sending and receiving DMs was down, at times functionality of feed getting refreshed was down.

About 47% of the users showed that they weren’t able to use the application, while 27% of them claimed that they were having an issue with the website of the platform. The remaining 26% of the users claimed to be having server connection issues.

What we Could Confirm

We at Shiksha news verified that the platform was not responding for most part of the noon. From the explore feed, to sending and receiving DMs to the feed, glitches were popping up everywhere. On checking the platform once again after 5 PM, it looked like the company had restored its services. We double checked the status at around 5.20 PM, and things looked fine for our team, on both web and application.

Similar Outage Occurred in July

The outage was similar to that of one in July earlier this year where platforms like Zomato, Amazon, Olx, Paytm, PlayStation Network, State Bank of India and others abruptly faced downtime, leaving millions of users baffled.

The cause of the outage was ascertained to be a service glitch of Akamai Technologies. Akamai Technologies is a global cybersecurity platform that provides cloud services to all the above-mentioned platforms.
