On Monday, the Centre announced that Indian citizens can download their DigiLocker documents through WhatsApp. The Press Information Bureau announced the service earlier on Monday and issued a statement which read – “Government under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been working for “Ease of Living” through Digital India.

The statement further continues and reads, “In this context, the MyGov Helpdesk on WhatsApp is a major step to ensure governance and government services are at the fingertips of citizens. MyGov Helpdesk will now offer a suite of services for integrated citizen support and efficient governance, starting with Digilocker services.”

For the unversed, DigiLocker is Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s initiative which lets Indian citizens access their authentic documents virtually. The DigiLocker can be considered an online document storage system where citizens can upload their driving license, PAN card, Voter ID and more.

The basic use-case of DigiLocker is to eliminate the reliance of physical documents and gives users the opportunity to share documents across government portals via internal mechanisms.

With the new integration with WhatsApp, citizens can now download their DigiLocker documents such as PAN card, policy papers and more, all through WhatsApp.

The idea of an all-digital, almost paperless Indian government came one step closer to reality when the Indian government launched the DigiLocker in 2015. The idea was elementary, giving Indian citizens a digital document holder, which would store their most used and important government documents.
