In a baffling incident reported from Taiwan, a nursing home received online outrage after it hired dancers for its elderly residents in wheelchair. The Taoyuan Veterans Home, a state-run nursing home for elderly, had hired adult entertainers to put up a show and give its senior residents some form of entertainment. However, after videos from the “show” went viral on social media, the nursing home had to apologise for the decision.

Earlier last week, the Taoyuan Veterans Home organized quite a show to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, a holiday in Chinese culture where people celebrate wheat and rice harvest. The idea was simple, give the elderly men in wheelchairs a reason to celebrate and loosen up.

However, the show was none other than any. Visuals of the head-turning performance filmed by an attendee showed adult dancers gyrating against men in wheelchairs. As one would assume, the video of the incident quickly went viral, with many objecting to the performance and the decision taken by the state-run nursing home.

Eventually, the nursing home had to submit an apology. “The intention of the event was to entertain residents and make them happy. We are very sorry for the offense that was caused,” read a part of the apology.

The Facts of the Matter

Popular Bollywood film ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’ had a crucial sequence where the hero hired a dancer to perform for a man diagnosed by cancer, in the hopes that it would cheer him up. It seems that reality imitated fiction in Taiwan, where a state-run nursing home for elderly veterans held an “entertainment night” where they called adult dancers to perform for elderly men in wheelchairs.

Dancer Hired to Celebrate Mid-Autumn Fest

According to reports, the Taoyuan Veterans Home brought an adult entertainer for a raunchy performance to celebrate the Mid-Autumn fest, a popular festival celebrated in China to celebrate the harvest of rice and wheat.

Somehow, a video taken by an attendee of the way crawled its way to mainstream social media platforms such as Twitter, which is where problems started piling up for the nursing home. Many netizens outraged and protested against the choice of festivities.

‘Raunchy’ Visuals Go Viral on Social Media

Some visuals emerging on social media shows a group of men sitting in wheelchairs and looking at a scantily clad adult performer dancing and putting up a show. While the men’s faces were cover with masks, their eyes did have a glint of shock and awe in them.

The outrage on social media led the nursing home to issue an apology. “The intention of the event was to entertain residents and make them happy. We are very sorry for the offense that was caused,” the statement of apology read.

Dancers Hired to “Lift” Spirits of Residents

Meanwhile, a spokesperson of the nursing home claimed that the official Mid-Autumn parties had earlier been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To “lift” the spirits of the elderly veteren residents, they arranged a exotic dancer to perform.

The spokesperson did agree that the dancer’s actions were “enthusiastic and fiery”, and that the administration of the nursing home will be “more cautious” while planning such events, a NYPost article stated.
