In a shocking incident reported from Odisha, a javelin pierced through a 14-year-old boy’s neck during the sports meet. Thankfully, the boy is out of danger, and is recuperating at hospital following a successful surgery. The boy who could’ve been the victim of a tragic mishap was identified as 14-year-old Sadananda Meher. Sadananda was watching a practice session at the Boys’ High School, Agalpur,  when a javelin struck him.

An India Today report quoted Balangir Collector Chanchal Rana, “There was a sports meet in the school and this unfortunate incident happened. We are relieved that the child is out of danger”. The student, with a javelin pierced through his neck, was later rushed to the Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital. A team of specialists comprising of ENT, radiology, and anesthesia, took over the case.

As per BBMCH medical superintendent Mansi Panda, told media that the javelin was struck just below the boy’s skin and had damaged the muscle layer. The internal organs of the boy remained safe and sound, and the boy’s condition was stable after the surgery.

Meanwhile, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik took to Twitter and reacted to the mishap by tweeting, “CM wished the boy speedy recovery and announced that the expenses towards his treatment will be met from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.”

Sports meets in schools and colleges are often the epicenter of various kinds of injuries as students engage in several physical activities. However, in a shocking incident, a 14-year-old spectator of sports meet recently met with a shocking accident, where a javelin thrown by another student, pierced through his neck.

The incident was reported from Odisha’s Agalpur, and the 14-year-old boy was identified as Sadananda Meher. Sadananda was reportedly watching the sports meet practice session of javelin throwing when a javelin thrown by another student, struck his neck and pierced it.

Boy Out of Danger

The boy was rushed to the hospital, underwent a successful surgery, and is reported to be out of danger. “There was a sports meet in the school and this unfortunate incident happened. We are relieved that the child is out of danger,” Balangir Collector Chanchal Rana was quoted saying.

The boy was rushed to the Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital (BBMCH) with the javelin pierced through his neck. As per BBMCH superintendent Mansi Panda, the javelin had not caused damage to internal organs, and had damaged the muscle layer on the boy’s neck.

Reports Confirm No Internal Damage

Sadananda was made to undergo x-ray and ultrasound scanning, and its reports confirmed that his internal organs, such as trachea, thyroid gland, carotid artery, and other organs close to the pierced section of his neck, had not suffered damage.

The boy underwent a surgery, and will be kept for 72-hours in the hospital for observation, as authorities want to make sure the metal head of the javelin does not cause infection.

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik Reacts

Reacting to the accident, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik took to Twitter and said, “Expressing concern over the javelin accident in Balangir, CM @Naveen_Odisha has directed to provide all treatment to the injured student. CM wished the boy speedy recovery and announced that the expenses towards his treatment will be met from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.”

The development comes just days after a man in a passenger train died after an iron rod pierced through his neck as he sat on seat of the Neelanchal Express.
