On World Heart Day, the World Heart Federation is asking “use heart to connect”. As per the reports of the World Health Organization (WHO), all across the globe, more than 18 million deaths occur in a year due to Cardiovascular Disease (CVD).

To fight this world’s number one killer, the World Heart Federation (WHF) celebrates World Heart Day on the 29th of September every year. On this day, the World Heart Federation organizes and sponsors international events based on the decided theme for every year to create more awareness about cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Impact of Covid-19 on Cardiovascular Disease

Because of the ongoing pandemic of Covid-19 all across the globe, the figure of 18 million has reached and 520 million people left with cardiovascular disease.

This crisis through which we are living has made an urgent need to connect people to heart health through innovative and different ways. Therefore, we should ensure to nurture and fuel our hearts in the best possible way.

World Heart Day History

In 1999, the World Heart Federation (WHF) collaborated with the World Health Organization (WHO) and founded World Heart Day, as a day to create awareness about CVD.

It was the president of WHF, Antoni Bayes de Luna who conceived the idea of this day. The first observation of World Heart Day was on 24th September 2000.

Initially, World Heart Day was observed on the last Sunday of September till 2011. Later, from 2012 onwards, the date has been set to 29th September each year. In the same year, the world leaders took a pledge to reduce global mortality rates by 25% caused due to non-communicable illness by 2025.

How World Heart Day is Celebrated?

On this day, every year the World Heart Federation sponsors several events with a pre-decided theme for highlighting actions that people can take to prevent and control CVD. On various platforms all over the world talk shows, posters, podcasts, and forums are organized for discussing and dispersing information on cardiovascular diseases.

Events like walks, cycling, and other sports are organized to encourage people to be more active for better health. Medical societies host several gatherings and scientific meetings for cardiovascular research.

2021 Theme of World Heart Day

World Heart Day 2021 is based on the theme of “Use Heart to Connect”. This theme is based on the idea to find and use innovative ways to connect people all over the globe to heart health.

The idea mainly focuses on promoting heart health in lower resource areas and communities by using knowledge and compassion. It aims to connect each heart using digital power to create awareness, and preventing and managing CVD globally.

You should go for a regular heart checkup to your doctor or any WHD event offering a health checkup. Try attending health lectures, fitness events, and other cardiac emergency self-help classes like giving CPR.

Importance & Significance of World Heart Day

This annual event provides a universal platform that can help people to pay focus on health and fitness tips for a CVD-free life. It helps in motivating people to participate in various fitness activities through events like concerts, talk shows, and running events.

The main motive behind the observation of this day is to educate people about the signs, steps to fight and cure CVD, heart diseases, and strokes. High blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, smoking, and cardiac amyloidosis are some of the causes of CVD.
