Recently, a Pakistan diplomat sent to a UN General Assembly made comments on ‘American Daughters’ and was seen making vlogs on Times Square, New York. Shehryar Khan Afridi was sent by Pak PM Imran Khan to give speech at UN and raise awareness on Kashmir. However, the Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir’s Chairperson Afridi went on a different tangent where he made some questionable comments on the values of American women.

New York is currently the epicenter of world leaders as it is hosting the 76th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Today (Sept 25, 2021) marks the fourth day of the once in a year high-level meeting of the world leaders.

Most diplomats and leaders refrain from making a fiery or a controversial statement on the UNGA assembly stage, owing to its importance when it comes to diplomatic relations.

However, recently a Pakistan diplomat made some questionable comments while he was roaming on the streets of New York. These are the facts of the matter.

The Facts of the Matter

Shehryar Afridi has been bestowed a once in a lifetime opportunity by Pakistan Prime Minister. He has been given the chance to speak on the UN General Assembly stage where his primary task is to “raise awareness” on all that’s been going on in Jammu & Kashmir.

However, Mr. Afridi lost the sight of the big picture, and instead of going on the diplomacy roundabout, he chose to give a live commentary on “values” of USA citizens. Afridi, in his vlog, was seen walking around the Time’s Square, wearing a Levis t-shirt.

Afridi Was Sent to Raise Awareness, Loses His Own

He then goes on a tirade on the American values as the camera recorded some homeless people on the sidewalks. He also made some questionable remarks on the ‘American daughters’ and said that Pakistani women live in a much better condition.

“Understand Our Values, See Reality of Those Who Lecture Us”

“Whatever the ethnicity may be – be it Baloch, Punjabi, Sindhi, Kashmiri – we give respect to women. But see here, these American daughters. Understand the values that we have and then see the reality. See the conditions of people who give us the lectures and tell us ‘I am the King’,” he said, walking on Time’s Square Street.

Pakistan’s Reality – Ranked 153rd out of 156 in Gender Equality

What Mr. Afridi means by values and condition of American women can be debated and can be explained only by him. However, an interesting fact is that Pakistan is ranked 153 out of 156 countries on the gender parity index, according to World Economic Forum’s Gender Gap Report.

Further, when it comes to human rights, Pakistan ranks 140 among 162 countries in the Human Freedom Index 2020 whereas United States of America ranks at 17th spot.

Afridi Was Stopped at Airport for Secondary Search

Earlier, when he landed in US from Pakistan, he was reportedly asked to step aside for a secondary search at the JFK Airport. Later, the Pakistan Embassy in USA claimed that the search was a routine one. The statement from the Embassy in Washington read, “As noted by the Embassy of Pakistan in Washington, as a first-time visitor, Mr Afridi had secondary screening briefly and was cleared in routine without any guarantees being sought or given by anyone from the Embassy or the Consulate.”
