Details

The sale of acid from over-the-counter avenues was banned in 2013 in India due to multiple brutal acid attacks. And yet, India continues to be losing its fight against crimes related to acid attacks. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, between 2014 and 2018, India reported jaw-dropping 1,500 acid attack incidents.

What makes the situation even more serious is the fact that with such a high number of attacks, India attracts the lowest acid attack related convictions. According to an RFI report, less than 5% convictions are made in such cases despite stringent laws and punishments.

Recently, Madhya Pradesh’s Panna was shaken up by another acid attack where a woman was brutally beaten up and then had acid thrown in her eyes. These are the facts of the matter.
