In the recent Pegasus row, high-octane parliament drama on the Pegasus controversy was witnessed when a TMC MP snatched India’s IT Minister’s statement & tore it. Once again, a session of Parliament was thrown into bedlam as country’s newly appointed IT Minister, Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw was about to give his statement regarding the Israeli spyware Pegasus.
While Indian parliament have seen some glorious moments and speeches from political leaders like Narendra Modi, former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, it has also had its fair share of instances filled with chaos. Parliament proceedings enthusiasts across the country are well aware that an adjournment is always in card as at times, parties of opposition don’t let leaders speak.
What happened at the Parliament Today?
On Thursday, July 22, chaos once again ensued in the Rajya Sabha after Santanu Sen, Trinamool MP, snatched Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw’s statement on the Pegasus spyware. The TMC MP then further tore the statement, throwing the entire session into bedlam.
Mr. Ashhwini rose and was about to give a statement on the whole Pegasus controversy. Suddenly, out of nowhere, TMC leader Santanu snatched the statement, tore it and threw its pieces in the air.

What followed the Chaos?
As the uproar, Mr. Vaishnaw couldn’t complete his statement and went on to lay the statement’s copy on the House table and was quoted by the media saying-
“A highly sensational story was published by a web portal on July 18, 2021. Many over-the-top allegations made around this story. The press reports appeared a day before monsoon session of Parliament. This can’t be a coincidence.”
TMC Leader Continued on His Behaviour
Meanwhile, it seemed like TMC leader Santanu was not done and he went on to exchange words with newly appointed minister Mr. Hardeep Singh Puri, in what it appeared to be, a heated exchange. The Rajya Sabha chair was occupied by Deputy Chairman, Mr. Harivansh who sternly asked parliament members to avoid unparliamentary attitude and adjourned the proceedings till tomorrow, 11 AM.
After the ruckus, BJP MP Swapan Dasgupta was quoted saying-
“He was making a statement. You had the right to question him after that. But instead of going in for a debate, is this the type of hooliganism we see inside the House? This is completely against all norms; I think it should be condemned out right.”
Swapan Dasgupta was further quoted by ANI saying-
“It seems that some people of Opposition, notably some of the TMC MPs, got up & took the paper from the hands of the Minister (IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw while he was speaking on ‘Pegasus’) & tore it up. This is completely unseemly behaviour.”

What is the Pegasus Controversy?
The entire Pegasus controversy evolved after major publishing houses such as the Washington Post and the Guardian published reports which claimed that a spyware called Pegasus was being used in countries across the world for spying on journalists, politicians, judges and influential people.
As per the reports, these individuals were targeted right before the Lok Sabha elections in 2018-2019. Journalists like Sushant Singh, Siddharth Varadarajan, politicians like Rahul Gandhi, Prashant Kishor, Ashwini Vaishnaw and several prominent academics and judges were targeted in the attack.
Since then, leaders from all the opposition parties are attacking the Centre while the Centre has dismissed all allegations which claimed its involvement in the matter.
