A study says that physical inactive patients are facing severe COVID-19 infection and are dying from the deadly virus.

In the British Journal of Sports Medicine, a research report says that physically inactive people require more intensive care and even die, as compared to those who are normal and following physical activity guidelines.

In the research, it is stated that people with lack exercise and are not health-conscious are suffering from a severe infection of COVID-19. Even the doctors find it difficult to save such patients.

The research says that physically inactive patients are at severe risk. It is stated in the study that “Physically inactive was the strongest risk factor across all outcomes.”

The researcher said that “In fact, physical inactive was the strongest risk factor across all outcomes compared with the commonly cited modified risk factors, including smoking, obesity, diabetes, hypertension (high BP), cancer and cardiovascular disease.”

The conditions and problems earlier connected with the severe COVID-19 infection were obesity, advanced age, diabetes, heart problem/cardiovascular disease.

But sedentary lifestyle was not included in the category of risk of severe infection. Although, it cannot be ignored and now it is believed that it has contributed as a risk factor for COVID-19 disease.

The researcher studied whether physical inactivity is responsible for the severe infection or not. They compared the data between January and October 2020, of patients infected with COVID-19 disease of 48,440 adults in the US.

They found that the average age was 47, of which 3 out of 5 were women. Their (BMI), mass body weight was 31, which is classified as obese.

In the study, researchers took attention to specific and influential factors like race, age and underlying medical conditions.

It was found that half of the patients had no underlying disease like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, kidney, disease, cancer, chronic lungs problem. However, 20% had one and above 30% had reported two or more conditions.

The researcher said that physically inactive COVID-19 patients have more than twice the possibility to be admitted to the hospitals as compare to physically active people.

As per the study, “such patients were also 73% more likely to require intensive care and more than 2.5 times likely to die due to COVID-19 infection.”

The Kaiser Permanente Medical Center of US stated that it is observational research and it cannot be established as a cause.

The researchers stated that, “We recommend that public health authorities inform all populations that short of vaccination and following public health safety guidelines such as social distancing and mask use, engaging in regular (physical activity), maybe the single most important action individuals can take to prevent severe COVID-19 and its complications, including death.”

The research also depends on patients’ own outcomes of their physical activity. However, the lack of exercise and inactivity cannot be assumed as the only cause for COVID-19 infection and death.
