Prime Minister Modi reportedly sent letters to cricketing legends Jonty Rhodes and Chris Gayle for their ‘profound connection’ with India. The Indian Prime Minister sent the letters on R-Day, appreciating their service to the sport, and their connection with the country. For the unversed, Jonty Rhodes is a former South Africa cricketer, known for his trail-blazing fielding in the cricket field. He also has a daughter from his second wife, whom he has named India. Meanwhile, even new age cricket fans would know about the exploits of Chris Gayle and the admiration he has garnered thanks to his cricketing spirit.

The Facts of the Matter

On the occasion of Republic Day, the Indian Prime Minister sent personalized letters to two cricketing legends from two countries – South Africa and West Indies. The move will surely strengthen the ties between the countries with, as all of them have a rich cricketing culture. The cricketing legends were South African all-rounder Jonty Rhodes and West Indian explosive batsman Chris Gayle.

“Decided to Write to You and Few Indian Friends”

On January 26, Jonty took to Twitter and shared the greetings he received from PM Modi and thanked him for same. The letter to the former South African player read, “26th January this year is even more special because it is happening at a time when India marks 75 years since freedom from colonial rule. Thus, I decided to write to you and a few other friends of India, with a sense of gratitude for your affection towards India and a hope that you continue to work closely with our nation as well as our people.”

“You Truly Are a Special Ambassador..”

It further read, “I would like to convey my Republic Day Greetings to You. Over the years, you have developed a profound connection with India and its culture. This is truly reflected when you named your daughter after this great nation. You truly are a special ambassador of the strong relations between our nations.”

The letter further read, “India is witnessing a series of historic socio-economic transformations. I am confident these will empower lives and contribute to the global fund.”

Jonty Rhodes thanks PM Modi

Thanking PM Modi for the letter, Jonty in his response wrote, “Thank you @narendramodi ji for the very kind words. I have indeed grown so much as an individual on every visit to India. My whole family celebrates #RepublicDay with all of India, honouring the importance of a #Constitution that protects the rights of the Indian people #JaiHind.”

Jonty’s Connection with India, Chris Gayle Also Gets Message

52-year-old Jonty Rhodes emerged as one of the most fascinating cricketing mavericks to emerge from South Africa. While most players back in the day made their name by their batting or bowling skills, Jonty was a phenomenal fielder. He used to cover the ground quicker, make that one extra percentage of efforts to take the catch, and used to throw his entire body to field the ball. He is also known to spend a few months every year in India, and has a daughter named India as well.
