Hours after the Dantewada Maoist attack that killed at least 10 cops, a disturbing footage has surfaced on social media, capturing the trail of chaos and carnage in the immediate aftermath. The video of the footage has been making rounds of social media, and many news outlets have claimed that it is an exclusive footage they acquired, including outlets like NDTV and News18.

In video shared by ANI, a policeman is seen seeking cover behind a vehicle, taking aim and firing back at the insurgents. In the background, the harrowing sounds of gunfire resonate, as a person is seen crawling to the side of the road. A thin wire-like object, believed to be the IED’s wire, lies across the street, and a voice can be heard exclaiming, “Udd gaya, poora udd gaya (blown off, completely blown off).”

The officer who filmed the incident spoke exclusively to NDTV, stating that they were on an anti-Maoist operation when the attack occurred. The targeted vehicle was third in the convoy of seven, and all the occupants of that vehicle were killed.

The security forces have raised questions about security lapses in the aftermath of the attack. However, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has vowed to eliminate Naxalism, declaring that the fight against Maoists is in its final phase.

The Facts of the Matter

Maoist insurgency remains one of the most significant threats to India’s internal security, particularly in the central and eastern regions of the country. Chhattisgarh is one of the states that have been severely affected by this insurgency. The Maoist rebels have carried out numerous attacks in the state, targeting security forces and civilians alike.

On April 26, 2023, a tragic incident occurred in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district, where Maoist insurgents detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), killing ten District Reserve Guard personnel and a civilian driver.

A day after the incident, social media has been flooded by videos showing the immediate aftermath of the attack.

What Does the Video Show

The footage, captured by a civilian driver in one of the vehicles that were part of the convoy carrying the security personnel back to Dantewada, offers a chilling insight into the devastation wrought by the IED blast. The video shows a person crawling to the side of the road moments after the explosion, as sounds of gunfire can be heard in the background. A thin wire, suspected to be connected to the IED, can also be seen lying across the road.

In the video, a man can be heard exclaiming, “Udd gaya, poora udd gaya,” a phrase that roughly translates to “blown off, completely blown off,” underscoring the magnitude of the tragedy that has unfolded.

An Account of Harrowing Naxal Attempt

It was a routine day for the District Reserve Guard (DRG) as they were returning from a security operation in south Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district. Ten brave jawans, along with their driver, were on their way back to the district headquarters when tragedy struck. The Maoists had set up an improvised explosive device (IED) which was triggered as the DRG van passed by. The deafening blast left no survivors and sent shockwaves across the state.

Attack was Well-Planned and Well-Coordinated

It was a well-planned operation by the Maoists, who had prior information about the security forces’ movements. The security personnel had left the district headquarters the previous night after receiving information about Maoists’ presence in the area’s Darbha division. The DRG had used a private vehicle to avoid attracting attention, but it proved futile.
