The nature of post COVID-19 complications have been such that the complications are ever emerging and ever-evolving. After cases of Black Fungus, White Fungus and even Green Fungus, 3 new ‘bone-death’ cases have presented a new scare in the medical community and the masses alike.
After the peak of the second wave of the COVID-19 took lives of several hundred thousand people across the nation, the numbers are showing that the waves are receding. However, while COVID-19 numbers have receded, number of post-COVID-19 complications have increased.
It all started with new cases of Mucormycosis aka black fungus. Later, the fungal infection showed its multi-colored fatal forms with white fungus and green fungus cases also being identified in the nation. Further, another concerning complication emerged in COVID-19 recovered patients. Patients, who had taken vaccines and had already recovered from the virus, were showing symptoms for Intestinal Gangrene.
Post COVID-19 Complications: Blood clots, fungal infections and now bone-tissue death
While these have been the major cause of concern in the COVID-19 recovered patients, concerns like blood clots, pulmonary issues, diabetes and other cases have been spoken less about but remain a major threat. Such has been the nature of the virus that now a new challenge has come in the form of bone-tissue issue for medical fraternity and COVID-19 patients.
What we know so far?
According to reports, doctors in Mumbai hospitals have observed some cases of AVN (Avascular Necrosis) – or, more commonly known as bone death – in patients that had recovered from COVID-19. While, the numbers do not yet indicate that the issue is rampant in COVID recovered patients, it is now being feared as the next-worst post recovery complication.
Cases of AVN after COVID-19 Recovery
As many as 3 new confirmed cases of the new post-recovery complication have emerged. Interestingly enough, the 3 cases were that of doctors that were below the age of 40 years and had recovered from the virus. These 3 patients were diagnosed with AVN and were rushed to treatment. It should be noted that even in the prominent British journal for medical science called the British medical Journal (BMJ) the AVN was highlighted as a symptom of COVID-19.
What is AVN?
AVN or bone death issue or osteonecrosis, is a disease that is a result of loss of blood supply to the bones – most commonly to the hip bone, the femur bone, shoulder bone and ankle bone. As mentioned earlier, due to the lack of blood supply, the bone tissues gradually die and collapse.
While the initial stages of the disease can be symptom free, the later stages can be pain inducing. In any instance where a person puts any weight on the affected region, the disease can cause problems. What starts as a bone not working appropriately may lead to joint destruction.
Is steroid usage the culprit in AVN like fungal infections?
After the advent of COVID-19, the usage of steroid is a largely debated topic. Heavy and disproportionate usage of such steroids have lately been discouraged. Hence, doctors have been discouraging disproportionate usage of steroids to patients who have been hospitalized due to COVID-19 and put on heavy steroids.
