What we know so far?

According to reports, doctors in Mumbai hospitals have observed some cases of AVN (Avascular Necrosis) – or, more commonly known as bone death – in patients that had recovered from COVID-19. While, the numbers do not yet indicate that the issue is rampant in COVID recovered patients, it is now being feared as the next-worst post recovery complication.

Cases of AVN after COVID-19 Recovery

As many as 3 new confirmed cases of the new post-recovery complication have emerged. Interestingly enough, the 3 cases were that of doctors that were below the age of 40 years and had recovered from the virus. These 3 patients were diagnosed with AVN and were rushed to treatment. It should be noted that even in the prominent British journal for medical science called the British medical Journal (BMJ) the AVN was highlighted as a symptom of COVID-19.

What is AVN?

AVN or bone death issue or osteonecrosis, is a disease that is a result of loss of blood supply to the bones – most commonly to the hip bone, the femur bone, shoulder bone and ankle bone. As mentioned earlier, due to the lack of blood supply, the bone tissues gradually die and collapse.

While the initial stages of the disease can be symptom free, the later stages can be pain inducing. In any instance where a person puts any weight on the affected region, the disease can cause problems. What starts as a bone not working appropriately may lead to joint destruction.

Is steroid usage the culprit in AVN like fungal infections?

After the advent of COVID-19, the usage of steroid is a largely debated topic. Heavy and disproportionate usage of such steroids have lately been discouraged. Hence, doctors have been discouraging disproportionate usage of steroids to patients who have been hospitalized due to COVID-19 and put on heavy steroids.
