In a horrifying incident reported from Pune, a food delivery agent allegedly kissed a female student and later sent messages to her saying that he is “like her uncle’. The incident was reported from Pune’s Kondhwa area and occurred earlier on September 17. Initially, it was being reported that the delivery agent worked for Zomato. However, Zomato has denied its involvement, and a probe is on to ascertain which delivery app was the accused associated with.

According to reports, the 19-year-old victim of molestation had placed an order on one of the food-delivery apps. As per Jagannath Jankar, the area police in-charge, the girl had placed an order on Zomato, but Zomato interchanged the delivery with Dunzo.

At around 9.30 pm, the delivery agent reached the 19-year-old victim’s place. He delivered the food and asked for some water to quench his thirst. When the girl came with a glass of water, the delivery agent allegedly grabbed her and kissed her twice. The accused also sent her messages saying, “he was like her uncle”.

The victim approached the police the same night with her friend and the accused, identified as Raees Shaikh, was arrested hours later. He was booked with sexual harassment under multiple sections of the IPC. However, he was granted bail the very next day.

The Facts of the Matter

Earlier this week, food-delivery giant Zomato was once again in the eye of the storm after a molestation case involving a delivery agent in Pune emerged. According to reports, a food delivery agent molested a 19-year-old girl in Pune earlier on Sunday, September 17.

Zomato Clears the Air

Initially, it was being reported that the agent was associated to Zomato. However, the foodtech unicorn claimed that the delivery agent was not from their ‘fleet’ and claimed that it is cooperating with authorities regarding the matter.

“We have been in touch with the authorities to cooperate with the investigation. We conduct third-party background verifications while onboarding any person to our fleet and have a zero-tolerance policy,” a statement by Zomato read.

Delivery Interchanged from Zomato to Dunzo

Earlier on September 17, a 19-year-old engineering student ordered food from Zomato. However, the platform interchanged the delivery with Dunzo app, as per police officer Jagannath Jankar. The accused delivery agent, identified as 40-year-old Raees Sheikh, reached to the woman’s place to deliver the order.

Accused Molests Girl

On reaching the address, the accused asked for water to quench his thirst. When the girl came back with a glass of water, the accused grabbed her hand and kissed her twice. After the girl raised an alarm, the accused fled from the scene.

He later sent her messages, saying that she should be thinking of him “like her uncle”. The victim and her friend approached the police and filed a complaint. Hours later, the accused was arrested, who was given a bail the very next day.
