In a horrific development emerging in the case of a boy who died after drinking from teacher’s pot, it is being reported that the teacher tried to buy the family’s silence. The incident sheds light on the horrific atrocities inflicted about persons belonging to the Dalit community. What’s more concerning is that the incident was reported not from a small corner of the country, but in the most populous state itself.

According to reports, the victim, Indra Kumar, was a 9-year-old student. Indra studied at the Saraswati Vidya Mandir school, Jalore, and was in the third grade. According to the deceased boy’s kin, the teacher Chail Singh assaulted the boy to an extent that the boy lost his life.

The deceased’s father, Dewaram Meghwal was quoted in an Indian Express report saying, “On July 20, my son Indra Kumar, a student of Class 3 at Saraswati Vidya Mandir in Jalore, was beaten up by teacher Chail Singh because he drank water from an earthen pot meant for Singh. My son didn’t know that the pot was meant for Singh, who belongs to an upper caste.”

The boy’s family has also alleged that the accused asked them to “arrive at a compromise” and not file a complaint regarding the matter.

The Facts of the Matter

In April 2021, a 9-year-old girl from Dalit community was allegedly raped and murdered, and her body was forcefully cremated in the national capital. A nation-wide outrage was witnessed, which was fizzled out in the weeks to come.

In March 2022, 2 minor girls from the Dalit community were allegedly raped by teenage boys and were then handed Rs 3 and Rs 5 to keep their mouths shut. The incident was piled on the heap of similar such crimes.

9-Yr-Old Becomes Victim of Discriminatory Violence

Another horrific story of atrocities witnessed by Dalit community has emerged. This time, a 9-year-old boy was beaten up by his teacher for allegedly drinking from the same earthen pot as the teacher’s. The incident occurred earlier on July 20th in Jalore district.

Father’s Complaint in the Matter

As per the complaint submitted by the victim’s father, Chail Singh, owned the Saraswati Vidya Mandir school, and taught there. In the complaint, the father alleged that Singh thrashed his 9-year-old son and hurled casteist slurs at him for drinking water from the same earthen pot meant for people of upper community.

Over the course of days, the boy’s condition worsened and he had to be taken to hospital. Initially, the boy was admitted to hospital in Jalore, and was later referred to Udaipur and then Ahmedabad. Earlier on Saturday, the boy passed away.

Family Promised Rs 1.5 Lakhs for Compromise

As per a new Indian Express report, the boy’s family were asked by the Rajputs of the village to reach a compromise and not alert the police. The community asked the victim’s family to not file a complaint, and in exchange, promised them a sum of Rs. 1.5 lakhs in two instalments.

Accused Booked, Arrested

The accused teacher has been arrested and booked under provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and Indian Penal Code. Meanwhile, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot offered his sympathies and further added that strict action will be taken against the accused. He also promised a relief amount of Rs 5 lakhs from the CM Relief Fund.
