In a situation where a friend of the public turned into a foe, a 56-year-old police officer in Rajasthan was arrested on Sunday for raping a 26-year-old woman who had come to him to file a harassment complaint against her own husband. It is shocking how this year, a similar incident shocked the country when a priest, who is supposed to be the bridge between God and humans, turned into the devil incarnate himself, and gang-raped a woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun district.

According to reports, a 26-year-old woman came to Kerli police station, Alwar district, Rajasthan, to file a complaint against who was harassing her and forcing her to give him a divorce. In the police station, she met sub-inspector Bharat Singh, who went on to rape the woman for three continuous days on the pretext of ‘counselling and settlement’.

In 2018, the now 26-year-old woman had filed a case of dowry harassment against her husband. The case was later settled, but according to the woman, the husband was forcing her to give him a divorce to which she was not agreeing. The 26-year-old complainant saw no respite and chose to approach the police. She met the sub-inspector in the station regarding the situation. The woman alleged that on March 2nd, 5.30 PM, when she went to file a case against her husband, the Senior Inspector Bharat Singh attended her and eventually trapped her. He claimed that he would help her in the case and would also counsel the couple.

Ashok Chauhan, Deputy Superintendent of the Police, Laxmangarh issued a statement in which he said, “The SI took the victim to her quarter and sexually molested her. When the victim reached the police station Sunday evening to get information about the action in her case, the SI again attempted to molest her. The victim reported this to another police officer and that’s how the matter came to the knowledge of Alwar SP, who asked for filing a case against the accused SI. Medical check-up of the victim has been done in a local community health centre (CHC).”

After the police came to know about the incident, an FIR against the Sub Inspector was immediately lodged under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code and subsequently, the alleged culprit Bharat Singh was arrested. “A phone recording has also been presented by the woman, which has prima facie verified her accusations. Action is being taken against the SHO of the police station.”

Disciplinary action, including the process of suspension against Bharat Singh, has also been initiated from the Inspector General’s office. The police is now currently in the process of taking action against the station house officer. Additionally, the officials are also considering sending to the police lines all the staff at the Alwar police station who were posted there for more than one year. Meanwhile, the women’s statement will be recorded before the district magistrate and an investigation will be conducted in the matter.

In another incident in the same state, a 30-year-old woman who was a rape survivor was set on fire in the Hanumangarh district on Thursday, March 5. The woman later succumbed to her burn injuries in a hospital in Jaipur and died.

The woman was living with her maternal grandmother and daughter following a dispute with her husband. According to the CCTV footage retrieved by the police, on the wee hours of Thursday morning, a man entered the woman’s premises, sprinkled some kerosene on the floor, and knocked on the door calling her name. When the woman opened the door, the man dropped a burning stick on the spilled kerosene, which resulted in severe injuries.

The police later arrested Pradeep Bishnoi, based on the victim’s grandmother’s complaint. Bishnoi was accused of raping the same woman and was out on a bail.
