On Thursday, April 1, 2021, the Union government bestowed the Dadasaheb Phalke award to actor Rajinikanth. The Centre will present Rajinikanth with the 51st Dadasaheb Phalke honour.

Singers Asha Bhosle and Shankar Mahadevan, actors Mohanlal and Biswajeet, and director Subhash Ghai were among the members of the jury who chose Rajinikanth for the honor.

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar tweeted that actor-politician Rajinikanth will win the Dadasaheb Phalke Award of 2019, India’s highest film recognition. In his message, Mr. Javadekar, Information minister and Broadcasting, wrote, “Happy to announce Dadasaheb Phalke award for 2019 to one of the greatest actors in the history of Indian cinema Rajnikant Ji. His contribution as actor, producer, and screenwriter has been iconic,”. The 2019 Dadasaheb Phalke Award, like the National Film Awards, was supposed to be declared last year and was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Numerous political figures like MK Stalin, PM Narendra Modi, B.S. Yediyurappa and many celebrities have sent their wishes via social networks.

PM Modi said on Twitter that ‘Thalaiva’ has several works with a variety of positions and also an amusing persona. “Popular across generations, a body of work few can boast of, diverse roles and an endearing personality…that`s Shri @rajinikanth Ji for you. It is a matter of immense joy that Thalaiva has been conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Congratulations to him,” the Prime Minister tweeted.

The Dadasaheb Phalke is by far the most prestigious film award and is presented by the government for excellent film achievements. Amitabh Bachchan, the closest friend as well as co-star of Rajinikanth in the movie, Hum, was awarded the prize in 2018.

Rajinikanth made his acting debut in K. Balachander’s Apoorva Raagangal, in which he performed a minor but pivotal role. At the starting of his acting career, the actor primarily played negative roles in films such as Moondru Mudichu (1976), till S.P. Muthuraman chose to switch his appearance and put him in a role which was positive in the movie, Bhuvana Oru Kelvikuri (1977). The movie was a huge hit, and thus the two went on to collaborate on several consecutive projects until the 1990s.

70-year-old Rajinikanth is the most legendary hero of Indian cinema. In 1975 he produced super hit movies like Sivaji, Muthu, Enthiran, Billu, and Baashha. Rajinikanth has also performed in Hindi cinema successes as Hum and Chaalbaaz. His last releases were Kaala, and 2.0 have been released in 2018, and Petta and Darbar were released in 2019. In the upcoming Annaatthe, Rajinikanth is going to be seen next.

Siva is the director of Rajinikanth’s movie Annaatthe. In Chennai, this movie is being filmed. The movie has prominent actors including Nayanthara, Keerthy Suresh, Khushbu, Meena, Prakash Raj, Soori, who will be seen in major roles. Imman composes the movie’s music.
