In a shocking development, the New York City is offering as much as $1,70,000 for a ‘badass’ ‘Rat Czar’ against the city’s rat menace. The development came to the fore after NY mayor Eric Adams’ administration floated a tongue-in-cheek job listing, someone with good communication skills, “swashbuckling attitude”, and “general aura of badassery”.

The 21st century Pied Piper will be responsible for devising rat mitigation strategies, managing rat curbing projects and initiatives across the entire city, and going as far as getting the hands dirty by having good extermination techniques.

“Do you have what it takes to do the impossible? A virulent vehemence for vermin? A background in urban planning, project management, or government? And most importantly, the drive, determination and killer instinct needed to fight the real enemy – New York City’s relentless rat population? If so, your dream job awaits: New York’s Citywide Director of Rodent Mitigation,” a Press Release read.

“Rats will hate this job posting. But 8.8 million New Yorkers and your city government stand ready to work with you to reduce the rat population, increase cleanliness, and prevent pestilence,” the listing further read.

As per a BBC report, there are as many as 2 million rats responsible for menace across the New York City. This means, there’s a rat for every four New York citizen.

The Facts of the Matter

Ideal Candidate Must be “Motivated & Bloodthirsty”

The person who will take the job will report to the Deputy Mayor of Operations. As per the listing the job will require “stamina and stagecraft”, and the likely candidate must be “highly motivated and somewhat bloodthirsty”.

What the Job Entails?

Further, the candidate must be someone who is good at “data collection, technology innovation, trash management, and wholesale slaughter. The listing also mentions that the ideal candidate will be the leader of a “rat pack”, and will work with colleagues from different government divisions.

The high-paying job would also involve traveling through the city, making people more aware, evaluating the situation, and when the situation calls for it, “eradicating in equal measure”.

The NYC Rat Menace

So far, the city rats have been unaffected by a multimillion-dollar initiative that was kicked off by former mayor Bill de Blasio. The initiative focused on prompt pick up of trashcans, strict housing inspections in targeted neighbourhood, and exterminating the rats by using dry ice. Despite the efforts, the rat menace in the city is at its all-time high, with reports of rat sighting more than ever.
