After the resignation of Trivendra Singh Rawat on Tuesday, Tirath Singh Rawat will take over as the new Chief Minister of Uttarakhand with a year to go for the state elections.
56-Years-Old Tirath Singh Rawat is a BJP MP from Pauri constituency. Being the head of the party in 2013-15 and was also an MLA from the state in the past in Uttarakhand. He will be sworn in later today.
Union Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, along with key members, has chosen Uttarakhand Minister Dhan Singh Rawat.
He is a surprising, yet interesting choice for the position. As per the sources, this decision was taken with the express approval of PM Modi. What sets him apart is that he is not identified by any faction in the Uttarakhand BJP.
The BJP faced the challenge of balancing the two groups; Old-time BJP players were hammering on their candidates and importing from Congress like Harak Singh Rawat and Satpal Maharaj,
BJP central observers told the leadership that any candidate of any faction would balance the election and harm the party.
It is because of this quarrel that Trivendra Singh Rawat became unpopular and his position became untenable.
Trivendra Singh Rawat resigned amid speculation of a change of leadership in the state amid allegations of non-performance and resentment within the Uttarakhand BJP over its functioning. Yesterday, he asked reporters “why they felt he had been removed.” Shri Rawat, who is at the forefront of the long line of Chief Ministers of Uttarakhand, said, “Go to Delhi to know why.
Tirath Singh Rawat has the work of Bhartiya Janta Party elections to be held in February, to turn things around for about a year in February. He has a low profile and is not known as a big leader, similar to his predecessor.
“I want to thank PM Modi, BJP chief, Home Minister, and central leadership who trusted me, a mere party worker who comes from a small village. I had never imagined that I’d reach here. We will make all efforts to meet people’s expectations and take forward the work done in the last 4 years”, Tirath Singh Rawat said.
