In a unique case of ‘reverse dowry’, a bride in Telangana, who was supposed to get Rs 2 lakhs from the groom’s family, called off the wedding over not receiving enough dowry. While reports of grooms calling off wedding over not receiving appropriate dowry are heartbreakingly common in India, a rare incident took place in Telangana’s Ghatkesar where a tribal wedding was about to be held.

As the decorated wedding hall buzzed with excitement, the bride unexpectedly cancelled the wedding at the last minute. The guests who were eagerly waiting for the auspicious moment were left in shock by the sudden turn of events. The bride had demanded more dowry, which her family had agreed to pay.

Shocked at the turn of events, the bride’s family demanded an explanation for the bride’s decision to cancel the wedding. They were informed that the bride had demanded more dowry, which the groom’s family had already paid.

Unable to comprehend the bride’s decision, the groom left the wedding mandap and his family went to the police. The bride’s family was called in for questioning, and the matter was resolved amicably between the two families.

It was later revealed that the bride was not interested in the marriage and had used the demand for more dowry as an excuse to break off the engagement.

The Facts of the Matter

Despite the enactment of stringent laws to curb the practice, dowry remains a prevalent issue in India. The dowry system has been a part of Indian culture for centuries, and while it is illegal, it continues to be widely accepted in certain communities. This system puts a financial burden on the bride’s family, leading to a culture of discrimination and gender inequality.
