Jharkhand MLA Irfan Ansari made a bizarre promise to the Jharkhand masses when he said he will make “road smoother than Kangana Ranaut’s cheeks”. The Congress MLA’s questionable remark came in a self-made video he shared on Twitter. In the video message, Ansari can be heard saying that as many as 14 roads will be constricted in his constituency of Jamtara. The roads will be “smoother than cheeks of film actress Kangana Ranaut”.
To compare a person’s physical attribute to a future infrastructural project is questionable on so many levels. However, it’s not the first time a statement like this has been made. Earlier, Rajasthan minister Rajendra Singh Guda received flak after he compared Rajasthan’s roads to Bollywood actor Katrina Kaif’s cheeks.
Political landscapes across the world are filled with graveyard of unfounded promises and unresolved agendas. India, where basic amenities such as electricity and water supply, are promised by leaders for votes. While some are able to fulfill the expectations, others fail to do so.
Amid the basic promises, a Tamil Nadu election candidate made buzz in March 2021 thanks to his jaw-dropping, and borderline laughable promises. The candidate, Mr. Thulam Saravanan, promised people of his constituency, a 3-storey house, a mini-helicopter, a robot and a trip to the moon! Later it was revealed that Mr. Saravanan was trying to create awareness among people to not fall for false promises.
Meanwhile, another political leader in Jharkhand has stirred controversy after making a promise that was poorly worded.
The Facts of the Matter
Following the suit of ‘politicians comparing roads to cheeks’, a Jharkhand MLA has claimed that roads in his constituency will be smoother than the cheeks of actress Kangana Ranaut. Reportedly, the Congress MLA shared a self-made video earlier on Twitter, which was shared by news agency ANI. After the video, netizens raised objections on the poorly framed comparison and alleged Congress leader of using the remark as a way to get famous.
In the undated video, the Jamtara MLA Irfan Ansari can be heard saying, “I am giving an assurance, that 14 roads will be smoother than the cheek of Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut. The smooth roads will be used by children from tribal community, the youths and the state’s business owners.”
“This is the work of Irfan Ansari”, the MLA can be heard adding.

Politicians and their Fascination with Cheeks of Actresses
It should be noted that this is not the first time a political leader compared roads to physical attributes of Bollywood actresses. The obsession with comparing infrastructural projects to an actress’s attributes not only objectifies them, but also warrants debate about how casually remarks such as these are made.
It all started with former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, who is credited to have promised the Bihar masses that he will make the state’s roads smoother than Hema Malini’s cheeks.
He later refuted to the statement, and claimed that he was falsely credited to have made the statement. Mr. Yadav alleged that it was Atal Bihari Vajpayee who made the remarks.
Earlier last year, Shiv Sena leader Gulabrao Patil stirred up controversy after he also compared the smoothness of the roads of his constituency Jalgaon to that of Hema Malini’s cheeks. After receiving flak, he issued an apology.
Similarly, in November 2021, Rajasthan leader Rajendra Singh Gudha turned heads when he compared the roads of the state to Katrina Kaif’s cheeks.
